If AAH goes, I can't see how we wouldn't get another 9 in ... 11:38 - Jan 24 with 2095 viewsBellevue_Blue

For all the KMc said yesterday, I can't really believe that we would let AAH go without being fully confident that we can get a replacement in.

Delap is three yellow cards off a two match ban and George Hirst has played 14 games in the last 12 months.

If we lose either we will struggle and if we lost both we might as well pack it in.

This sounds harsh but I doubt we would have started AAH even if Delap and Hirst were both absent, even if he was fully fit. So this makes little difference.

We didn’t, SS started ahead of him.

I said this the other day would be football suicide, A striker is one hundred per cent required a injury or suspension from disaster. Wolves let Cunha go it will relegate them.

I covered that off by saying "even if he was fully fit". I don't think AAH was for the Newcastle game.

Very hard to get the type of player KM wants, even more so in the Jan transfer window at a price that is right for us.

I think it would be sensible to sign someone, yes. But it has to be the right player - it's about improving the squad.

The other issue is....would a striker want to come here knowing that they won't get in ahead of Delap - that's another consideration for us as well.

If we do sign a striker, my guess is it will be an AAH upgrade and no more than that.

The chances of keeping Hirst and Delap both fit / available for our remaining games is pretty slim I would say given recent disciplinary and injury records.

Its a hard one to do though as whoever we sign isn't likely to keep Delap out, and 20 minutes off the bench might not be all that appealing.

Is Sargent worth a punt? Recently fit again, only 24, has experience in the premier league. To be honest if he played for anyone else I wouldn't be suggesting it, but flexing our muscle against norwich would make me laugh.

I’d consider taking Sargent plus cash for AAH.

Re a striker coming in, there are very few starting spots in the PL where a striker just walks in, most know that. Same with the likes of Enciso & Philogene, they're coming here to be part of the squad, no guarantees on starting.

You're selling the long-term proposition which is Delap likely off in the summer, George Hirst injury record and then suddenly you're vying for a starting spot.

It's sad to see that he's done so poorly since leaving us, he was a huge part in the promotion side from League One, and helped us over the line last season with a few goals as well. What has happened there?

In reality, McKenna likes rotation up too. If both had been available throughout the season, I think Hirst would have started games ahead of Delap. If we sign someone who is perceived to be an upgrade on Hirst, I think they will share the starting spot with Delap. Or, if we switch back to a 4-2-3-1, I can see Delap being played on the right in the some games. So I don't think it's a case of a new signing simply warming the bench or acting as cover.

Yeah that would be great.

In all seriousness I’d consider taking him as a third choice striker behind Delap and Hirst.

I hope we sign a third number 9 but Szmodics has all the attributes to play the number 9 in our system, even if it’s not his preferred position.

And given we now have Philogene, Enciso, Omari, Broadhead, Chappers, Clarke and Burns for the attacking trio behind the 9, we won’t be missing anything from those positions should he play up top.

I'd have him as a third choice IF he were fit. I think he works hard even if he's pretty lacking in ability, but he could do a job as cover. Trouble is he's not fit, and is unlikely to be so.

Szmodics has pretty much none of the attributes to play as a 9 in our system. He's small and generally not very quick with the ball. After Newcastle at home I cant see him playing as a 9 for us again.

He’s shorter than ideal I’ll give you that but I’m not sure Hirst is any quicker than he is.

He’s very good at pressing, makes clever runs, runs himself into the ground and is a physical battler. And he’s a good poacher too, which is a nice bonus even if not essential for our number 9.

I’m not advocating for starting him up there ahead of Hirst or Delap and like I said I hope we bring in someone else but my point is he could do a job up there in an emergency. We wouldn’t be totally screwed in the short term without the other 2. Let’s not forget we had Jackson as a lone striker for a month last season, Szmodics is a better fit than he was.
