Best starting XI for Saints on paper then? 16:44 - Jan 27 with 4881 views_clive_baker_

There's always nuance, who we're playing etc. I'm at the stage where we have to put our best foot forward, get the names with the PL experience and potentially higher ceilings involved and see where it takes us. We know what we'll get from the likes of Walton and Morsy, we'll get a 6/10. We also know it probably won't be enough, so lets twist and hope some of the additions can get closer to their ceilings.

Muric
Tuanzebe O'Shea Greaves Davis
Phillips Cajuste
Hutchinson Enciso Philogene
Delap

Bench includes: Johnson, Godfrey, Morsy, Broadhead, J. Clarke, Hirst, Szmodics.

Move our main attacking threat this season to the wing sounds like suicide in a must win game.

Hes so isolated in the 9.

He might be even more effective as a wide 10, supporting the 9.

No one is suggesting he is benched. He hasn't scored from open play since early Nov.

PLUS. He is still playing in attack on this scenario.

Don't be so closed minded.

Walton
Axel O'Shea Greaves Davis
Morsy Cajuste
Hutchinson Enciso Broadbean
Delap

Greaves is somewhat lucky to be in the side in my opinion but he's there now and he scored in our last game, and generally offers more of a set piece goal threat to be fair, so he stays for continuity.

Broadhead has had a good last month, just seems odd not to play him right now.

Don't see a world where Morsy doesn't play. I think on some level McKenna regrets not starting him against Brighton.

He's not had the service.

The last thing I'd want is our best attacking threat running back towards his own goal defending.

No one is suggesting he plays wing back.

Anyway, happy to agree to differ. πŸ‘πŸ‘

But that's what that RW role involves? See where Burns was when he got injured.

The problem for me is CM and getting someone capable of getting the ball into the forward players. The only way our forward players are involved.

CM is also an issue.

I'd like to see Delap play deeper with Hirst (or a new signing) in the 9.

It's ok to disagree.

You articulated precisely what he can prove.

Smart money says we play the better keeper, and that the back room team have been / are working with him to eradicate the bad decisions.

Eradicating bad decisions isn’t that simple though is it? Earlier in the season he cave rushing out too early against Haaland and we conceded. 10 games plus later he did it again against Bournemouth. These are the types of things that has seen him benched. Giving him a start Saturday is a lottery in a must win game.

Muric
Tuanzebe - O'Shea - Burgess - Davis
Morsy - Cajuste
Hutchinson - Enciso - Broadhead
Delap

I picked Burgess over Greaves because I'm not sure if O'Shea and Greaves have ever played together in a two before? In terms of the flanks we have players who know each other's roles from last year. Enciso looked bright against Liverpool. I think it's only a matter of time before Muric returns. Part of me thinks it would be better to do it in an away game but...

I don't think you can start Philogene and Enciso together yet. Too raw, unfamiliar with the system. And one (or both) will be electric from the bench. We need to start thinking in startersfinishers again.

Spot on. Philogene should not have started v Liverpool

Think Burgess just as threatening and not sure what he has done to be left out so widely

Omari needs a rest. So how about putting Delap right and Hirst up top?

Most important game of the season by a mile and you want to start experimenting by putting our star striker out on the right and bring in our only sub striker, leaving no striker option on the bench??

I think you can also put the idea of dropping Davis and playing Townsend in this bucket, which I've seen a good chunk of people suggest.

You might be right. That's the only real criticism of him and Woolfenden though over the last few years, they haven't scored enough from set pieces.

Think overall Greaves probably offers more of a goal threat, but I'm really not convinced he's a better defender yet.

CB partnerships need a year to really gel. Clearly they don't have a year to do that as we are trying to stay up. But give O'Shea and Greaves a year together and they will be unbelievable. Have to keep them together!
