Hurray. I wouldn’t want to be sitting in the front row - there’s a good chance you’d be sent off by mistake.

Maybe with what happened this means he won't want to give any soft sendings off this weekend?
Which probably means a Southampton player will get away with murder!!

To be honest. Its easy for a ref to make a mistake, VAR was more at fault re that decision.

Sending a player off for tripping somebody over in front of him?

I think the "Refs Call" change they made this season has been largely a good thing with fewer subjective decisions being re-reffed by VAR. I think I'd still prefer the odd one to get through where they might have sent him to have another look than for every decision to be getting referred.

Owes us a penalty as well.

Don’t get the OTT reaction to it tbh.

People have been calling for red cards for cynical fouls like that for ages, plus it was more than that, Lewis-Skelly raked his studs down the players leg a little bit, can see why it was a red.

Refs can make mistakes, you dont know how well he saw it, and the foot was high. It may have looked worse to him than it was.

VAR however, got to watch multiple replays in slow motion.

Studs were high, on a players ankle and made no attempt whatsoever to play the ball. Was a cynical foul to prevent a breakaway.

I don't think the argument should be over whether he got it right or not as much as the fact that he needs fans' support over the ridiculous targeting of his family by at least one idiot. I think he should get a round of applause from all fans of both teams before the game as a mark of support. Without a referee there is no match.

As for the decision itself, there is enough disagreement that it is fine VAR didn't get involved. Personally, I think it was not a red as the rules currently stand but I have no problem with the rules making something like that a red card. It was so late that there was no doubt it was a cynical foul and that is something the game as an entertainment would benefit from having cut out.

Pretty much agree with your stance. It's not a red with how the laws currently stand. I think VAR really should've overturned personally as it wasn't dangerous, violent or out of control but that's not Oliver's issue. Why he's got pelters for it is beyond me.

I also think blatant cynical fouls like this should be punishable with a red, it's just another form of cheating that is massively prevalent in the game now and needs eradicating.

It is a red. Studs up, half way up the calf.

And off the ball deliberately aimed at the player. As I said, I have no issue with VAR leaving the decision as it is.

I also don't think it is a sending off as the rules stand. I don't think it fits the description in the rules of serious foul play. The fact there is clear disagreement shows it is not clear cut for me at least.

Not from my viewing. It was an intentional trip, freeze-framed shots make it look like a rake but that's not what it was if you watch it in real time.

Studs are up and make contact half way up the calf. Its a poor tackle, irrespective of the trip and entirely justifiable red on that basis.

Morsy's on Harry Wilson was worse, I'd say, but was never a red.

It does not hit the definition of serious foul play as the rules define it.

However, the deliberate intent to stop an opponent in such a position really shouldn't be punished with just a yellow card.
