Was a bit young for Man about the house, but I remember George and Mildred well. It was a welcome surprise to see him in his takeaway using cameo in the Catherine Tate show.

Man About The House was the superior of the two.

R I P Brian Murphy on 11:30 - Feb 4 with 1658 views | BarcaBlue | For some reason George & Mildred was absolutely massive in Spain, easily the most loved show in the year or two after I arrived here. Benny Hill was probably second and The Young Ones not far behind. Never really understood the mass appeal, I mean it was half decent at the time but they were almost cult heros here in the late 80s (10 years after the last episodes were made). Mind you, Saturday night tv in Spain today still resembles what was being shown on uk tv in the 70s. There still an It's a knockout show on one of the public tv channels played out between villages and variety shows with ventriloquists - ventriloquists ffs.

I think I also remember him as the slightly strange friend of bed-bound Mr Merton.... He used to sit by the side of his bed and sing to him iirc Mr Merton was much like Captain Mainwaring's wife, frequently referenced but never seen...the very best sort of comic creation

In this country one of the most popular radio shows back in the 50s starred a ventriloquist. Work that out.

I met her c.1975 at a fete in Clare, along with the chap who played Albert Tatlock. She was lovely and kissed my hand; he didn't :-) More pertinently, best George & Mildred line: "Mr Groper?" "What?" "Oh, I'm sorry. Mr G. Roper?" [Post edited 4 Feb 13:59]

Must admit that i thought she had great legs. She was only 53 when she died. Don't suppose the alcoholism helped.

When I lived in the Canary Islands in the early 90's I went out with the stepdaughter of Glynn Edwards (Dave the Barman). She told me how Glynn and Yootha were very close right up until her death and she deteriorated terribly over the years due to her alcoholism.
