See Lego is offensive now. (n/t) on 23:41 - Feb 8 by lowhouseblue | YES!! they do suggest intent. who is doing the describing and the applying? and if those people don't in fact intend the terms to be gendered or heteronormative then on what basis can you claim they are? again - you're the only one to have mentioned a woke conspiracy - please don't try to link me to that nonsense. |
That first paragraph is an absolute car crash. It's okay to admit you just don't get it.

if you wanted to explain the imagined IMPACT of the terms you would say "understood in a a gendered way" rather than "described in a gendered way"; and "read as heteronormative language" rather than "applying heteronormative language". you have to read what the science museum has actually written which clearly relates to the people using the terms rather than impact on the people who read them. You are the one peddling the conspiracy. Namely the idea that the wokerati are asserting that use of male and female in respect of lego pieces is a deliberate piece of bigotry! That idea simply does not emerge from any natural reading of the material or context. Extraordinary!

Nope. You're reaching here because of your own agenda, which was made clear on page 1 and in various other threads on similar topics. There is nothing in what they have said that suggests intent. It's a ridiculous point, language either is heteronormative or it isn't, it's not a question of intending it to be or not. [Post edited 9 Feb 8:35]

It's extraordinary that in the modern world, cis gendered straight folks seem to think they are the ones who are really under attack.

The problem is that it is not just people having different interpretations. It is people (like the OP for instance) actively promoting the idea that the woke left are making ridiculous assertions so as to discredit them. And this idea spreads and takes hold. Before you know where we are, we will have people like Farage and Trump in charge and the loony right wing media lying on their front pages whilst the nation laps it up. Oh...

i'm not peddling any conspiracy and i really resent the accusation. i am critiquing something really thick and third rate which the science museum has put its name to. it's a sixth form level of simplistic, knee jerk nonsense and is just very poor and dog whistley. i don't know what the 'wokerati' is - you are the only one pushing that nonsense. the science museum is calling the names attached to lego bricks 'gendered and heteronormative' - the only natural reading of that is that they are rejecting the use of those names. i have no idea why you are doing cartwheels to deny that obvious implication. Or they are raising awareness of how normalised heteronormative language is in the way it's applied to everyday objects and getting people to think about that and consider the perspective of people who don't fit those norms. The brutes! Honestly, your take on this is awful.

See Lego is offensive now. (n/t) on 10:01 - Feb 9 with 989 views | Churchman | I remember when Lego bricks were just that. Bricks. You got a baseboard, bricks of different length and colours, some with angled top bits to make roofs and I seem to remember you could get some with holes in the side for Lego wheels. That was more or less it. I liked lego. My sister didn’t when I hit her on the forehead with a brick fired by a home made catapult, leaving a perfect brick shaped mark. She wasn’t happy. My dad wasn’t either when he trod on a misplaced brick with a bare foot. Dangerous stuff, lego. Far better than meccano though. I made a jeep with it. It still looked like a load of meccano [Post edited 9 Feb 10:03]

as i've explained at great length the use of 'male' and 'female in reference to connectors is an analogy to the biology of reproduction. it is not heteronormative - it is biological. thinking that children's building bricks should be read as have hidden meaning is juvenile. the meaning of language is primarily about intent. people use language to say something - in this case that two parts fit together. you can declare that a word is 'heteronormative' but if that is not part of what the speaker intends your label is irrelevant. it's not for you to force your extremely artificial meaning onto others.

Christ on a bike. I know you're a massive fan of binaries, but something being a biological analogy and heteronormative isn't an either/or. [Post edited 9 Feb 10:06]

then do it by finding a better example that is less made up and doesn't make them look a laughing stock. i have no problem with showing biases in language - but do it well and get it right or you look ideological and out of touch with reality.

Bizarre response, in keeping with your posting throughout the thread really. And again displaying your ignorance of the issue to boot, also in keeping with your posting throughout the thread. A fine example of when ignorance reaches an offensive level.
