See Lego is offensive now. (n/t) on 13:12 - Feb 9 by WeWereZombies
Currently the cuts to USAID are on hold, aren't they ? But if they do go through they could backfire on the reputation of the United States in another way, for some time now African politicians have been critical of dependcy culture and the prejudice that comes with it. If more melded aid comes in from elsewhere and proves to be more effective (I think the French have made astonishing strides in this respect, MSF first to arrive and last to leave for example) then the throwing money at the problem approach is done and handing over power takes over.
Yeah, it’s a huge soft power tool in all sorts of ways. Expands political influence, builds and funds connections and opportunities for the donor country’s organisations/companies/trade, etc.

so heteronormative language is defined as promoting heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation? but the science museum thinks that attaching 'male' and 'female' to lego IS heteronormative, but ISN'T promoting heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation? hmmm .... it just gets worse.
But this is entirely the point that you don't seem to grasping. The science museum isn't judging Lego

but it's calling it heteronormative and heteronormative MEANS promoting heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation. so you say the science museum isn't judging the use of 'male' and 'female' in relation to lego but it does see the use of those terms in that context as promoting heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation? do you see the problem with this?

The point is that it could be seen as having the EFFECT of promoting it, and as I have repeatedly explained, it is an invitation to think about how language can have those effects.
Nowhere is there a judgment, or a suggestion that it is intended or somehow malevolent. Stop it!

of course calling something heteronormative is a judgement. it's a judgement that something is promoting heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation. or does the science museum think that promoting heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation is a good thing. of course it doesn't, really don't be ridiculous - using that label is a judgement.
using 'heteronormative' is not a statement of fact. as i have explained repeatedly the science museum argument for using this description is fallacious - using 'male' and 'female' does not have the EFFECT of promoting anything because people understand that it is only an analogy to biological sexual reproduction. no one thinks that it is an assumption about sexual preference or gender. it is only in the warped and ideologically drive mind of the science museum that it has any EFFECT. that's why the science museum looks stupid.
jeez you really are committed to this culture war stuff. you could stop that.

I only mentioned it by way of a joke because you did say at 1.32.
"i'm off to lunch in the pub in a minute."

well i just do as i'm told and the exact time hadn't been passed down to me at 1.30 (i know that's gender stereotyping by the way).

This is going round in circles, so I'm bowing out
The full quote from the science museum's curated tour is below. People can make of it what they like, but is it really worth the outrage from GBNews, Elon Musk et al?
Certainly feels like some on here have interpreted it as a discussion on the use of language, whereas others have taken more offence to it
“Like other connectors and fasteners, Lego bricks are often described in a gendered way. The top of the brick with sticking out pins is male, the bottom of the brick with holes to receive the pins is female, and the process of the two sides being put together is called mating.
“This is an example of applying heteronormative language to topics unrelated to gender, sex and reproduction. It illustrates how heteronormativity (the idea that heterosexuality and the male/female gender binary are the norm and everything that falls outside is unusual) shapes the way we speak about science, technology, and the world in general.”

I HATE this culture war stuff.
Which is the whole point and the reason why I am making an effort to point out where stupid non-issues are being used by people to divide.

Another key aspect of the war on woke is the objection to science. This presumably has its roots in the fact that science does not reflect the biblical explanation of creation.
It results in things like climate change, covid and vaccine scepticism.
When it comes to climate change scepticism, Trump has even gone so far as to announce that he will, by executive order, outlaw paper straws on Federal premises, and return to plastic.
Another troubling aspect of what Trump is doing is cutting foreign aid, something that doesn't seem to fit with Christian values that the Christian right are supposedly so keen on.

Leaving aside that the ban on paper straws is a drop in the ocean when it comes to Trump's likely action in relation to the environment, I am not sure "I'm with Liz" is a good look these days.

Why is improving our environment considered lefty?
I would have thought conservatives would be all over the ideas of keeping things nice.

Imagine being this triggered by being asked to think about the potential impact of language and labelling.

It’s utterly bizarre. Especially as plastic pollution and the damage it causes to animals has got nothing to do with climate change (only via emissions from production, but you get those with any straw). And it’s mostly kids who like straws anyway.
Anyway, if people have to have straws, I can highly recommend metal ones. But once, use forever. Better for the environment, better for the wallet. Job done.
