Culture wars, including the "war on woke", is a very recent development in the UK as the following article indicates.

https://theconversation.com/britains-descent-into-culture-wars-has-been-rapid-bu

In its modern guise it has its origins in the US, where religion plays a large part. Indeed, as far back as 1992, the Republican Presidential candidate Pat Robertson said the following.

"There is a religious war going on in our country for the soul of America. It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we will one day be as was the Cold War itself." In addition to criticizing environmentalists and feminism, he portrayed public morality as a defining issue:

"The agenda [Bill] Clinton and [Hillary] Clinton would impose on America—abortion on demand, a litmus test for the Supreme Court, homosexual rights, discrimination against religious schools, women in combat units—that's change, all right. But it is not the kind of change America wants. It is not the kind of change America needs. And it is not the kind of change we can abide in a nation that we still call God's country."

It has reached its zenith in the USA with the second Trump Presidency which is legislating in this area.

Hopefully, the UK won't go down the legislative route, but attacks by the right wing media can still have a chilling effect. The result may be that businesses, public institutions and others will be reluctant to highlight issues or pose questions in the way that the Science Museum has. That to me would be deplorable because we live in a free country, and a fundamental aspect of our freedoms (including political, artistic and scientific freedoms) is the right to pose awkward questions and challenge.

"By definition a heteronormative relationship is male bits going into female bits". no it's not heteronormative, male bits going into female bits is the biology of reproduction.

"it shows how a heteronormative view of the world has influenced language". nonsense. 'male' and 'female' has been used to describe interconnecting parts for centuries. long before the term 'heteronormative' was invented or any one knew what gender was. the reading of 'male' and 'female' in this context (interconnecting parts) as anything other than biological is entirely modern and recently made up. to pretend that the historical naming of interconnecting parts carries any moral message or is intended as instruction as to how people should have sex is nonsense of the highest possible order. it's people just inventing something that they can then call out.

Heteronormative may be a recent word but it reflects a concept that has been a key tenet of the three Abrahamic religions for millennia. And, even these days, how many parents wouldn't (in an ideal world) want their children to produce grandchildren?

And as the dictionary definition I linked shows "gender" goes back a very long time.

Another key aspect of the war on woke is the objection to science. This presumably has its roots in the fact that science does not reflect the biblical explanation of creation.

It results in things like climate change, covid and vaccine scepticism.

When it comes to climate change scepticism, Trump has even gone so far as to announce that he will, by executive order, outlaw paper straws on Federal premises, and return to plastic.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/donald-trump-vows-to-go-back-to-plastic-by-

Another troubling aspect of what Trump is doing is cutting foreign aid, something that doesn't seem to fit with Christian values that the Christian right are supposedly so keen on.

Currently the cuts to USAID are on hold, aren't they ? But if they do go through they could backfire on the reputation of the United States in another way, for some time now African politicians have been critical of dependcy culture and the prejudice that comes with it. If more melded aid comes in from elsewhere and proves to be more effective (I think the French have made astonishing strides in this respect, MSF first to arrive and last to leave for example) then the throwing money at the problem approach is done and handing over power takes over.

Bizarre response, in keeping with your posting throughout the thread really. And again displaying your ignorance of the issue to boot, also in keeping with your posting throughout the thread. A fine example of when ignorance reaches an offensive level.

again, just general insults. you don't respond to any points made, you just repeat the same broad brush denials. and posters who think posting that they've won an argument is an alternative to actually arguing are very strange. but then i'm guessing that everyone who disagrees with you is ignorant.

anyway, i inserted the male plug prongs into the female socket holes and i think i got away with it. no one thought i was expressing any moral judgement on different sexual practices or supporting a particular reading of gender. i'm about to order a male 25mm to 1" mdpe connector and i'm hoping that it won't be read as championing any sort of sexual practice over any other. fingers crossed eh. isn't language fun.

I've made my argument several times, there's no value in restating it. You're views are offensive to be honest and the glibness of your post isn't a very good look.

if you're really offended by someone pointing out that the science museum has made itself look publicly stupid by misconstruing a very common phrase in order to further a narrow idealogical position then you really need to venture outside of your bubble occasionally.

but i don't think you are offended, it's what you do when you don't have a reasoned reply.

Yes, I think you're right. And it also opens the way for China to spread its influence.

And it may come back to bite the US in terms of security, given this.

When it’s custard or cream I’ll always choose cream. Yet if I have custard, I wonder why I ever choose cream.

A great mystery of life, partially answered by the memory of the lumpy morass one had as a child back in the day, especially at school.

Similarly, at home I would never use ready custard from a tin or packet. I always get the milk out and boil most of it whilst mixing powder with the rest of the milk and some sugar. But that's using a ready made solution. Ask me to make custard from milk, eggs and flour and I wouldn't have a clue.

The best custard I've ever had came with school dinners (at Northgate).

I am not sure how they made it, but its consistency and taste was unique and I've never come across custard that in any way matches it.

And in those days, one could come back for a second helping of pudding and custard near the end of dinner time.

so heteronormative language is defined as promoting heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation? but the science museum thinks that attaching 'male' and 'female' to lego IS heteronormative, but ISN'T promoting heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation? hmmm .... it just gets worse.
