Looked a class above, hope he starts at villa

Poll: If we sing for 90 mins for all remaining games, how many points is it worth?

Quite a few of these posts now about various players that seem to totally ignore context.

The team played great yesterday with some great performances but the context is that Coventry are a huge step down to what we face every week in the PL so comparing performances against them to other players performances in the PL is incredibly difficult.

Irrespective of the opposition it’s such a step up in midfield. It’s ludicrous if he isn’t getting in ahead of Morsy now tbh. We’ve got to roll the dice, we know what we’ll get from Morsy and it isn’t going to be enough.

He did OK. Nothing special. However with his reputation as a top England midfielder and his massive wage, he should be outstanding, a class above, and he so clearly isn’t. One of the big disappointments of the season.

Much of this is down to many people having already decided what they think of Philips, and can't be objective.

Therefore people with a predisposed negative opinion of him pick up on any little misstep, and those viewing him positively overlook these.

IMO he did a lot very well yesterday, but also did have a few poor touches/passes. Overall mostly very good, but a couple of moments when he got it wrong, and put us on the back foot - but nothing critical.

I listened to the game on BBC CW and Steve Ogrizovic and their commentator thought he was 'impressive'.

As that's a view from the opposition camp, it does suggest the confirmation bias you describe from our own fans is kicking in when he makes a single mistake.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I think there is a lot of truth in this post.
Phillips is (reportedly) on a massive salary here, compared to anybody else in the squad, or even compared to a combination of other players in the squad; he is not worth it & has seriously underperformed when considering the Kalvin Phillips we think of pre-Man City transfer.
But none of that should be part of the discussion we're now having here, as to whether he's good enough to be starting in our central midfield for our upcoming Premier League matches.
He's contracted to be here until the end of the season, so we'll be paying those extraordinary wages whether he plays or not. The only question should be, is he better, at the level he's currently displaying, with the prospect of further improvement through gametime, than Morsy or any other option currently available to us?
Some will say no, and that's perfectly fine as it's subjective & ultimately only McKenna's opinion matters, but for me, I'd have him in there alongside Cajuste, as I think that's our strongest partnership with everyone fit & available.

Philips used to make surging runs with the ball through teams at the highest level. This is the largest part of his game that has disappeared. Once a natural element of your game is gone it’s hard to bring it back.

He really wasn’t. He was fine. But given his pedigree should be imposing himself far more than he did against opposition like that.

He's done it on occasions for us. But I do feel hes playing a more defensive role for us than previous years.

In a couple games where he's got himself forwards. He's scored and made saves from the keeper.

I do think to get the absolute best from him it would be ina three man midfield.

a niche perspective

I agree re those you mention.

However, I would add Palmer and Burgess to your mentions who stood out as doing well. Woolf and Burgess looked good together.

I really liked the look of Palmer. Deffo Kalvin Davis vibes- proper Goalkeeper.Who cares if he can't play a 20 yard trivela pass, he made saves and just looked so assured.

I think he has found his level. Upper Championship player.

He was ok

most the "negative" I had from the game from him weren't the threaded balls that didn't make it, more the sideway/back passing from semi potential areas
