Laurie Sivell – The Big Interview 20:53 - Feb 10 with 2682 viewsspenny64

Lots of new lines and confirmation of old ones in this chat with Laurie.
Spoiler: Yes, he did save Pele's overhead kick in Escape to Victory!

Fantastic read, such a nice bloke too. Everyone knew about his lack of height but honestly it never worried me when he was between the sticks.. superb technician at his art and brave as a lion.

His son went to my school. Very fast runner. Also quite short. Didn't even know he had a daughter.

Seems strange that him, Clive Baker and Paul Cooper all played in the top flight but nowadays, all three would not make it as a professional keeper.

Seem to recall he was only about five foot seven, but an excellent keeper.
Like you say, was never worried when he had to cover for Paul Cooper, who wasn’t the tallest either.
Can’t help thinking we’d have four or five points more if he was our keeper this season

Poll: September 2025. Which one?

A lot of players wouldn’t make the grade today. Many wouldn’t stay on the pitch very long tackling the way they did either!

Apologies as I wasn’t clear - I meant in terms of height.

A good player back then would adapt their game and change accordingly to present day tactics or attitudes towards tacking. But a keeper under 5ft9 in height wouldn’t make it as a professional.

Paul Cooper was 5ft11 and that would be pushing it

I think some of the stats said that of Coops, but I never quite believed them.

Came across him a few years back at Ipswich Goals. No airs or graces, pleasant guy.

Same here, Brian Talbot was my second. Used to see a lot of Laurie when he ran a boys' football team in Lowestoft.

Had a brief chat with him on the train back to Lowestoft after the Southampton game. I suggested that he might have been a better choice for us in goal! He was very diplomatic.

The Exeter goalie playing tonight, on loan from Palace is only 5ft 10

If 3 points for a win had been in place in 1974/75, he’d be remembered as a League Championship winner rather than as Cooper’s number 2.
