CL night on 22:21 - Feb 18 by Lord_Lucan | They were a shameful lot. They tipped some old dear out of her wheelchair near to SAR statue, I also remember them having pictures taken with ignorant coppers with a red hand flag. Ended up in Revs (I think it was called something else then) and we had a few drinks with their lot but it got a bit fractious. End result Joe Joey Junior and I got pepper sprayed and nicked - OB ended up screwing Joes house (he lived with mum and dad still) and they took away his computer and everything . Can't remember what he got charged with now, it was something like incitement to organise a riot - or something like that. |
Been really annoying me but think it used to be called Pals.

There was definitely a place called Brannigan’s there so you’re probably right.

CL night on 21:52 - Feb 18 by Jimmy86 | Why are Rangers a bunch of bellends, just out of interest? They're not the ones who embarrass themselves by booing the minute's silence on remembrance Sunday, or by singing songs about the late Queen Elizabeth.. |
You answered your own question there.

CL night on 21:58 - Feb 18 by MattinLondon | I don’t particular care about the politics of either of the Glaswegian clubs - and I’m not really bothered about either of them in a wider context. But when they came down to Ipswich for a friendly they were the biggest bunch of racist c**ts I’ve ever had the misfortune to see. In fact I really want to see them go out of business…oh they did. I should really get over it. |
Ahh, I remember that friendly.. was back in 2004? They had the whole of the south stand.. Shame you encountered that.. no place for it and it's absolutely deplorable

Sounds about right - they kept singing sectarian based songs. Celtic are probably the same in terms of singing such songs but from an opposing viewpoint.

When it comes to sectarianism on part of Rangers, the following snippet goes a long way to explain it, and I imagine (but can't be sure) that the Troubles made it much worse. There has also been much immigration over the years into Glasgow of both Protestants and Catholics from the island of Ireland. "Rangers have a loyal and fervent support in the province [Northern Ireland), one that thinks nothing of sending thousands to games at Ibrox as though they were travelling from Kirkintilloch or some other town in close proximity to Glasgow." For my own part, as someone with two Scottish Protestant parents, I find it bizarre to see Union Jacks on display at a Scottish football club but the reason is plain and its nothing like the Union Jacks on display at, say, the Last Night of the Proms. Certainly, if I lived in Scotland, I would support neither Rangers nor Celtic because of the sectarianism but I do like to see Scottish clubs do well in Europe.

Is it just Celtic and Rangers divided by religion? Someone told me that Hibs and Hearts are also spilt like that by not sure whether that’s true?

They are, Hibs having the predominantly Catholic/Republican fan base, Hearts the Protestant/Loyalist one. Though neither have the large following in Rep of Ireland / Northern Ireland that Celtic/Rangers do - and it definitely isn't as intense as the Glasgow rivalry. [Post edited 19 Feb 17:29]

That's a bit of a myth. This from a link in Wikipedia. "Sectarian bigotry may not be completely absent from this relationship, but it has always been less important than identification with territory. Hibs supporters tend to belong to the north and east of Edinburgh, while Hearts supporters (who outnumber their city rivals by a ratio of approximately two to one) are more usually found in the south and west." I also came across this which tends to confirm it. "Having attended a Catholic School in Edinburgh a long time ago. If Hibs are a Catholic club someone forgot to tell the school children there. I can exclusively confirm that there were fans of all football teams in attendance (yes even Rangers)." As it is, my father's parents were both born in Leith, so if I were to adopt a Scottish team it would be HIbs.

I went to a Hibs v Rangers cup final at Celtic Park back in the day and it was nuts. I get the feeling that Hibs hate Rangers and Hearts hate Celtic more than they hate each other. Hibs are a tasty bunch as it happens, one for one I would easy put them top of that tree.

The flag of Ulster... The Secterian problem is a huge one and is a wider issue in society... credit to both clubs, as they're trying to tackle it, using football as a positive influence in doing that... Half the time you wouldn't even know they're 2 Scottish football clubs, which is the sad thing

Do you think Celtic are right to boo or sing during the minutes silence for remembrance then? Or sing songs about the late queen being in a box?!
CL night on 05:33 - Feb 20 with 990 views | WeWereZombies | Worth remembering, considering the turn the thread has taken, that Celtic won the European Cup under Protestant manager Jock Stein. And that Rangers finest seasons in recent years came when they were managed by, from the red and nominally Catholic half of Liverpool, Stevie G.
