“The journey is always a lot better than the destination” 23:53 - Feb 22 with 2215 viewsMatt_Netherlands

Very much feeling this tonight, after being told it repeatedly by fans of a few “yo yo” clubs last summer.

To cheer me up, can anyone give me three positives to being in the premiership? (Aside from financial security and publicity).

N.B. I’ll take this all back, if we stay up.

Not sure if this question is rhetorical or not, but here’s your starter for 10.

- a chance to attract world class players to the club
- a shot at Europe
- not losing your best players to teams in the EPL

To achieve this a club needs to be in the EPL, progress and get established.

We may be some way off this now, but if you’re not in the premiership, then you don’t have any of these advantages.

That ‘financial security’ myth bothers me greatly.

We’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money on players that haven’t looked like giving us a puncher’s chance of staying up since we beat Huddersfield in that final game last season.

We’re going down, and not with the eye-watering resources some would have us believe.

The publicity side is utterly meaningless. A few Ed Sheehan pseudo-mates dumping their mindless instagram brain floss before moving on to photographing their cocktails and latching on to Leeds for a bit next season is neither here nor there.

Three positives to cheer you up? Not happening I’m afraid, because we’re playing Championship football next season.

I can give you four for next season though.

No Premier League chancers will come sniffing around KM

We’ll have won more than one home game by March 2026

Some new boys to the Championship with 17% possession tactics won’t bother us in the slightest

We’ll probably take 4 pts off Norwich.

I spoke to a Sheff Utd fan just after we were promoted and he basically said that you'll enjoy promotion a lot more than next season.....

And he's definitely right. This season, for the most part, had not been enjoyable.

Without a journey there is no destination. We had that, after Royle so nearly pulled off a miracle, for 20 years. The pursuit of mediocrity while watching the club fall apart. So three things:

1. Watching my team walk out to play Liverpool in the Premier League. I never thought it’d happen again. My dad couldn’t be with me so I was there for us both. It was a pride filled moment.

2. Watching the club’s infrastructure grow. Ground, Training Ground, community stuff, media helped this year by Premier League status. The club is moving forward.

3. The club giving it a go. The challenge.

Anyone who has played sport or done anything in life knows it’s not always going to go the way you want it. Sometimes, if you are doing something like boxing or say rugby or even a ruck with somebody bigger and stronger (school days for example) you know you’re going to get a pasting but that is not the point and it doesn’t matter. It’s about the attempt and sometimes what you can learn for next time.

I personally think the whole "journey is better than the destination” is a complete load of nonsense.

Of course watching us beat everyone in sight last year was brilliant but I'd give that up every day of the week to watch Ipswich compete in the best division in the world with a significantly better playing group.

Three positives ...

- You've seen your football club go toe to toe with some of the worlds best players at PR this season (something very few global football fans can boast)

- You've seen an improvement in the quality of players you watch

- You've watched it in a much improved stadium

Totally agree.

And to add to that, we have arguably overachieved so far, against everyone else's expectation - we were favourite to finish 20th. We may still, but if we stay as we are and get relegated in 18th, that is better than most (non-fans) would have predicted before the season started.

On this first two points, I’ve had people say to me “even if you’re losing it must still be amazing to see superstars play live in the flesh?” Honestly, no it isn’t! I thought it would be great seeing the likes of Haaland, Palmer, De Bruyne etc and that seeing them would make defeats easier to take…. But it really doesn’t.

Your last point is very true though, it does very much feel like a stadium to be proud of again.

Points 2-4 are spot on.

I fear point 1 will be a non starter because he’ll still leave like Kompany did after relegation! Woukd imagine his new contract includes some sort of relegation clause too if teams come in for him.

My boss is Sheff U, walking around with a.spring in his step this season, loving it again he said to me, we both agreed that you just want to see your team win when you've spent your money on the ticket, travel etc..

3 positives.

We would not have signed Delap and seen him score for us repeatedly in the Premier League.

We would still be playing the likes of nodge, Derby, Leeds, etc in the Championship and struggling to get results against them and everyone would be moaning about that.

We would have sold the likes of Davis by now.

3 negatives for me are:

Not able to get tickets to watch.

Some people moaning all the time.

VAR not improving the accuracy of decisions.

Yes I would love to watch us compete in the Prem but has rarely happened, just one home win in 7 months. (How 5hit were Chelsea? We beat them at home!) We've just participated.

I was there when McKenna's ITFC won in the Premier League at Home. Our only home win in a year.

We have got a result in nearly half of our matches. Yes, we haven't won enough and we haven't scored enough goals.

I find it odd that so many seem to think we should be achieving as well as Spurs, Man Utd, West Ham and Everton rather than struggling to keep up with Wolves. Call it participation if you like, but at least we are still within touching distance of staying up.

It marginally improves the accuracy of decisions but rarely in our favour

There does feel like a big team bias with it

I try to think of this season as still part of the journey, as I hope we will be good enough for the Premier League the season after next. The quality in the squad has improved us and that should be apparent next season back in the Championship. I think we just have to endure the rest of this season, and try to enjoy any results we get in the league, plus the FA Cup run. Next season we won't have to put up with VAR, but all the advertising and the matches being moved for TV will be as bad as ever (all those 12:30 kick offs).
