Curious what people's thoughts are on Cajuste... 09:35 - Feb 23 with 1253 viewsITFCBlues

Probably our best CM option, but does he do enough?

Hasn't scored or assisted all season. A few flashes, like his run yesterday, but does he do enough?

Similar to Phillips for me in that they've been restricted in our set up.

Both for me are far more effective in the opponents half yet most of their games seem to be spent holding shape in front of our backline..

Yesterday phillips assist and cajuste driving runs caused our attacks to happen.

Cajuste will absolute shine as a midfielder once he's over his knee issues and Phillips.. After 2 years of barely any football he has shown in patches what made him the player he was.. he's now knowing our luck our for 4 weeks again.

But as a pair. Good players. But two I think are both box to box players.

a niche perspective

He's been fine but not to the levels of hype he's had on here imo. Difficult job in our midfield at this level though.

Neither will be here next season, pointless discussion.

The biggest job in the summer will be finding two centre mids.

Was talking about him yesterday. Ultimately the issue is, if he wasnt permenately crocked he would be a Brentford player.

The raggy doll version of Cajuste is all we were ever going to get, and yet is head and shoulders above our next CM. Which given the lack of statistical output you highlight, does kind of put up in lights the problems we've brought upon ourselves in that position over last couple of windows.

I think he's a quality player but is clearly struggling for fitness, which is the reason Brentford didn't sign him.

Our obligation to buy had we stayed up was £10M which feels about the right valuation. Wouldn't be surprised if we still sign him in the summer, but he'll probably return to Napoli and be sold to another team somewhere in Europe.

No point signing a player who isn't fit over a whole season and hasn't contributed towards a single goal.

He's done his best but we need to find Morsy MkII + AN Other.

I've not watched all games so I can't comment too much but he seems to be a very good player yesterday.

I think it's unfair to beat him with the "he hasn't scored" stick.

Last season when we had a break on, we were piling players forward who were busting a gut to get in or around the box to assist. This season, any break away and midfield is too slow or unable to assist. I don’t know if it’s orders but our midfield has been non existent in both attack and defence the most of the season.

He will be playing in the Premier League next season, even if we are not.

It is odd, isn’t it? - sometimes I do wonder if it’s strictly necessary/needed- although playing in a two man midfield in the premier league when your partner isn’t the most mobile does probably mean that most weeks he’s goosed.

Quality player but our system is incredibly demanding of the CMs, and unfortunately I don't think any of them have been able to influence games enough this season. The Morsy-Luongo pivot worked so well last season as we had more possession and teams didn't break as quickly, but our lack of athleticism in CM has been exposed all season.

While I am still firmly in the 'In Mckenna we trust' camp, I find it interesting we haven't tried 3 in midfield at any point. The 'extra man' has either been at centre back or attacking midfield. A holding midfielder would have given us more structure to respond to quick counters and keep possession in central areas.

I think in a 3 Cajuste would really thrive.

Can't play 90 minutes hence why Brentford pulled out . We love a injured player.

You can see he's got plenty of ability but he's not really been fully fit all season, hence not starting every week and rarely completing a full game. He was everywhere in that opening 10 minutes yesterday and we really should have been in front before Spurs even had a kick but we've not been brilliant at converting at home when on top all season. Thought he faded a bit after that. Basically, not entirely sure what to make of him. Ability wise, very good, but this season we've massively lacked players we can rely on to put a shift in week in and week out, and he falls into that bracket too.

Classy player. Makes good runs and he’s a good passer of the ball. But he can’t play 90 mins and when he is on it feels like he drifts in and out of games. Maybe he’d be able to do more with stronger players around him? Bit chicken and egg, that.

Phillips is the better of the two and you get glimpses of why he’s played for England at times. But only glimpses. Those days are behind him and again, he doesn’t appear to be able to play 90 mins week in week out.

The balance of our midfield hasn’t felt right all season. It dominated Leicester till the clown in black got us down to 10 men and actually they did ok for a period yesterday. But most games, not the best.

Morsy has done well, but age and the Premier League have taken their toll. A five year younger Morsy and Luongo (underrated player but now finished) would have given a better balance but could they have sustained it in the PL? Probably not given they struggled for possession against the better teams in the Championship.

All in all a good question around Cajuste. In conclusion, I’m disappointed he’s not offered more, but as has been pointed out he won’t be here next season. I can see why McKenna took the risk on him. He’s not short on ability.

The problem with our midfield is we have in the past had players like Diesel Morris, Brian Talbot and of course the trio of Wark, Muhren and Thijssen. There's been someone who is the engine room, the player that get's up and down the field. Cajuste can't or isn't given 90 minutes, neither Morsy or Loungo are young enough or mobile enough and Taylor can't nail down the position. You need real class in the Premier League today to compete. Teams that have spent many more millions than Town can't compete. Phillips and Grealish cost Man City £150 million, that's £30 more than the six players Town brought in and Grealish can't get a regular game and Phillips is on loan to us and has struggled in a lot of games.
