Jaden Philogene yesterday- 10:14 - Feb 23 with 3634 viewsLibero

I found his performance to be a very frustrating watch.
Pulling the ball out of the air, just to pass it to the invisible man, slowing the game down in situations where he should be attacking the full back, taking shots from silly positions and generally not playing with the kind of intensity I expect of a Kieran McKenna player.

What *really* annoyed me though is that once the game was gone, he started to play and actually attack his full back directly, put in crosses, link up with Hutchinson.

Everyone’s entitled to a bad game and it’s still very early days for Jaden at the club, but I do have a few concerns based over what I’ve seen thus far.

Here’s hoping it’s just part of the settling in period.

Tremendous defender that's a bit over the top last season at Everton he was dire never played in Italy his poor as was shown by a 33 Yr old Son yesterday .

Think this was the thread you wanted…

Ben Godfrey by Dubtractor 22 Feb 22:35
That was a bit of a struggle first half wasn't it? His positioning was all over the place, and Son had him on toast. As soon as he was booked it was clear he'd get hooked at half time.

Really thought he'd be a decent addition for us, but he seems utterly lost in a league he used to be fine with.

Thanks to everyone sharing their views on Philogene-

It’s interesting to read what others think. I’m far from writing him off but there’s certainly a few question marks against him and seemingly I’m not alone in that feeling.

I suspect the commenter saying he will show his worth in the championship, is correct- he netted 12 times in 38(?) games in the Championship from a wide position- he obviously has potential.

Oh come on, of course he is the latest scapegoat. He’s been here 5 weeks and played 3 games for a poor team with no midfield. Not every player does a Paul Mariner and tear it up from the off. One or two do, like Delap, but it’s very rare. I thought he did some good things yesterday and got swamped or made the wrong choices at other times. Like all the forwards did. He was up against top players.

Clarke? Somebody has said he’s had virtually a full season. He’s actually made 5 starts and 15 sub appearances - again in a poor team and we are actually in Feb. Against Man City he was left having to pick the ball up from his own penalty area. Does anyone truly expect anyone bar Maradona to do that on a regular basis?

Played in his right position with a better midfield and a more settled team and you’ll see a much better player. Oh and he made the goal yesterday, not that it stopped the moaning around me.

It intrigues me how people love to pile in on our own players. It’s the worst I’ve ever known it (worse than Leicester’s forum where a bloke called Skipp and the Board are getting pelters) and it has to be bad when the Captain and Manager have to ask people to lay off. But no, in the boot still goes. I’m bewildered at what people want and clearly they believe that giving a player no time at all and as much abuse as possible rather than encouragement is the way forward.

The loanees though tend to be spared the worst of the vitriol but there it is. The question ought to be how and why did we let in another hatful of goals at home.

I don’t think it’s pelters, but for me the price that has been paid leads to a certain expectation of which philogene doesn’t look any close to hitting. I didn’t think he was much last season either compared to other players that had more influence end looked more likely to provide an outlet. I don’t see they from philogene, not in this league. I am sure he will look good next season in the championship but that’s not why we purchased him. I think reality will be that, like muric, he was an overpriced gamble that won’t pay off.

Have to say I disagree here.

The crowd at PR have been overwhelmingly supportive throughout the season, other than at the end of a hugely disappointing result vs Southampton.

Philo isn't getting pelters from the crowd at PR (at least, not from my position in NSL) - absolutely some audible frustration yesterday that he was, repeatedly, making poor decisions (which he very much was), but nothing more than that.

As with Jack Clarke, he has come here with a very hefty price-tag - it absolutely stands to reason that spending £15m - £20m on a player attracts a great deal of scrutiny.

Not sure where the comments re: the manager asking fans to 'lay off' is coming from - McKenna states yesterday in the post-match interview that:-

'Despite the result, McKenna and his team were given a warm reception by their fans at the whistle and the Blues boss was asked how he is taking the situation with Town having won only once at home this season.

“I’m fine, the support is really appreciated,” he continued. “We don’t take it for granted, not every club gets it, but I also know that the club knows and the support knows the journey that the team’s been on. Can get bored of saying it, but that’s the reality.'

In the 20 years prior to last summer, our most expensive signing was George Hirst - we've spent 100 times his transfer fee since last June. That's going to attract attention.

In summary, I don't share your viewpoint here.

He's so lightweight and weak that where normal players have their full surname he has to have his first name on his shirt to minimise the burden of weight of letters he has to bear.

At least in the team news and on the big screen they now call him Philogene rather than Jaden. It seemed odd to have one player listed by his first name only.

I thought he showed a lot of promise yesterday, but was also frustrating. He will be good in the Championship next season, but £22m is a huge outlay to live up to.

He’s been here five minutes. How many threads and comments on him now? Played what three games in a very poor team that concedes goals with ease and has next to nothing in midfield.

I get that he’s the latest hate figure, taking the crown from Jack Clarke, not least because of the Villa nonsense, but give the bloke a chance.

Philogene is a very talented a player that I can see doing well in his career. Like AAH, the haters might be able to boo him out of the club if they try really hard, but I’d prefer to see him given a chance.

The problem yesterday was not the forwards, whatever their limitations. It was behind them that collapsed on itself during the first half and Spurs were given all the time in the world.

I’ve seen our ‘supporters’ pile in on Hutchinson and Clarke too (he even got dropped into a thread about our fullback ffs. Talk about booting the bloke) - the scorer and provider. All the forwards gave the ball away more than I’d like, including Delap, but part of that was because they were under pressure from two or three very good players every time they went anywhere near the ball.

Compare that to Son who was given the freedom of Portman Rd yesterday and he wasn’t the only one.

I don't think you can really apply the 'supporters' logic to Philogene.

He didn't want to come here in the summer. He only want to come when he realised he'd get a game and get away from playing in the reserves at Villa. His agent instigated endless shenanigans and he clearly earns a tremendous amount. Villa also said he's not up to much.

I personally think there were countless red flags and we still signed him.

He's come here and at best looked a bit naive by running into endless cul de sacs and at worst looked lightweight, lacking quality and frankly a bit disinterested/lost.

Sorry to be so harsh but we aren't talking about a Burns signed from Fleetwood. We are taking about £21m player from an established Prem club. The generic blue tinted defence doesn't work for me on this one.

Such an avoidable risk.

My thoughts were that he was positionally very good, did well defensively if not, as expected, getting out muscled half the time.

Let's not forget it was a new partnership down that side too, so some slack to be given.

My main gripe was the 'slowing things down' just putting his foot on it and stopping, before doing anything, feels really counterintuitive to how we play now when you see him doing it. Definitely a player in there though.

Just not true re. Jaden. He wanted to come here. But Villa's matching rights meant Philogene basically had no say in the move. Hence why he looked so forlorn during his time at Villa this season. I think a full pre-season under his belt with us will do him wonders - and Jack Clarke.

If 3 points were given for stepovers we would be sat on 20 points.

Jokes aside, he's hardly had any football since the end of last season, coming into a team that is in a dogfight, going to be a big ask. I'm sure he'll come good, but not expecting much this season.

Godfrey is a strange signing, played once in 6 months for Atalanta, confidence must be pretty low, looks a downgrade on HC for me.

Poll: Should Muric be dropped?

I appreciate it won't always be straight forward for a new player. Learning a new style of play, learning their role and responsibilities on and off the ball, having to relocate to a different part of the country etc. All these things take time and for some, it clicks instantly, for others, it takes a bit longer and unfortunately for the rest, it doesn't work at all.

That said, when you spend £22m on a player in the January window, I expect that player to make an immediate impact or show us signs of what is to come if they're getting up to speed for the first few games - like Enciso did.

With Philogene, he's not ready to make an impact now. He looks like he's low on confidence. He's not taking on a man and there's not been much quality with his end product. This is what disappoints me the most - signing a player for that fee who wasn't deemed good enough for a club who signed him on a 5 year deal and could integrate him in over 12-18month period without needing to expose him to loads of minutes, but we have signed him and although it's early days still and I don't want to write him off, but at PL level for the next 12 games, I don't expect much.

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?
