Serious question, how long a sentence do you think someone should get for that kind of offence, and why?

Public servants are still human beings, with human emotions. I don't know what led to the assault but context is important. When Eric Cantona attacked the bloke at Selhurst Park, it was allegedly because of racist abuse and comments about his mother. As a public servant myself, I have been hit, spat at and threatened numerous times. Occasionally I react and twice in 26 years in this job, I have lashed out. Once was when a patient came at me, in the back of an ambulance, and I felt threatened, the other when someone spat in my face from about 20 cm. I don't feel shame for these reactions and would probably do it again in the same circumstances. [Post edited 25 Feb 7:12]

if everyone got 10 years everytime they punched someone, imagine the prison population! mind you, it'd have solved the cunha problem, so you might be on to something...

Because it's madness to lock someone up for 10 years for punching someone when it's a first offence, maybe? If we had sentences like that we'd have a massive prison population which would be a huge drain on public resources. You're getting into the territory of having a police state with that kind of sentencing for low level violence.

What's madness is he's still going to be recieving his 91k salary while he's in prison. You couldn't make it up.
