For anyone who likes chess on 15:21 - Mar 7 with 1175 views | nodge_blue | Do you play online? I used to be (I thought) good as a school boy and never played for years. I then tried online with chess.com in lock down and watched a load of YouTube vids by Daniel Naroditsky to learn openings. But sadly I came to realise I wasn't as good as I thought. My highest rating was only about 1350. Id play for hours which probably was a mistake as I don't think you can concentrate well for long periods. And I read that good chess players only regard people with ratings of 1400 and over to be decent. So Kinda gave up. But it was fun. Played people all over the world. Some would trash talk in chat. Always liked beating a Russian for some reason.

I've not played chess for a long time to be honest. It grew massively during lockdown with online play to the point where a lot of professional rapid tournaments are now online and streamed on YouTube. Howell often does commentary and analysis for those. Daniel Naroditsky is great, he's more focused on blitz though where he is superb. SB | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Daniel has a YouTube channel. He does speed runs as a new player with elo of 1000 then streams the games as he beats everyone and progresses up the ranks. But he explains all his thinking. He really made me realise how sh1t I am in comparison. What he can see and plan is incredible. Worth watching almost as light entertainment in themselves. I got obsessed with opening theory and stuff like the Danish gambit. Which is like a troll opening where you appear to be giving up your pawns but then there’s these aggressive traps lurking. I do love chess but it was a bit sad to realise I’m not that good. I would say though that the bots you can play on chess.com are far easier than playing a person. So a 1400 bot I can beat easily but not a 1400 player. Chess.com is free as well. Or it was. [Post edited 7 Mar 15:49]

That's where I go for my daily humiliation. I originally went there for some sweet, yet slightly acid, Asian fruits, but had no joy, so I started playing chess there instead. I'm crap.

I’m on there most days too. Playing 5+0. If my rating is above 1600 I feel quite pleased until it dips low. Lichess’ ratings are inflated compared to their competitors, sadly.

1600 is a good rating. I was a bit surprised how solid alot of players are. I feel the pressure for some reason though and then take too long to move and then end up playing a basic error cos ive ran out of time. There was no doubt alot of players on chess.com were knowledgeable in opening theory even at my level. [Post edited 7 Mar 17:02]
