I think it's against the establishment more generally. Our national anthem is all about glorifying the monarchy, which for quite a lot of people is an outdated institution with a very dodgy past and a pretty dodgy present. I can understand people protesting against that. Happy Newcastle won, but that has nothing to do with some people booing a crap song.

It’s a bit more than a dig. They’ve felt let down and targeted by the ruling classes for decades, and with some justification.

Much like with Celtic supporters, 99% of them are descended from Irish immigrants who were discriminated against from their arrival in Britain, hence why both clubs were founded, because they were being excluded from British society.

Interesting article that explores the assumption that Everton were the Catholic club and Liverpool the Protestant club. Indeed, I remember going to Anfield in 1980 to see them play Spurs and standing in the Kop where there were a number of Rangers fans who had come down to support them when Rangers weren't playing. https://www.toffeeweb.com/season/18-19/comment/fanscomment/37054.html Fortunately, Liverpool doesn't these days have the sort of sectarianism that exists in Glasgow, although my wife does remember the Orange Order parades that took place when she was younger. Maybe it's down to the fact that neither club adopted a green kit or had a name with Irish connotations. [Post edited 17 Mar 16:46]

It's definitely more of a choon, no argument from me on that one, although any of these old imperialist/colonialist songs need the lyrics working on if they are to be fit to represent a modern, forward-looking country.

A lot of the Scouse Liverpool supporters have told me that their families were excluded from Everton, certain well-off areas and establishments in Liverpool, and even the local Councils because they were Irish Catholics and it was only until charity from the Methodist church set up Liverpool were they then able to play football, and certain Tory ret-conning of history has been undertaken to hide how woefully Irish immigrants were treated in Britain, to the point they were working the poorest jobs and had a status of second class citizens here.

Not really, can't we celebrate our country without wanging on about conquering and colonising other countries? We've got plenty of other stuff we can be proud of.

Regardless of the inaccuracy.........., ............. I can't believe they would tell you about their backstory as it is completely unlike a scouser to whinge and whine

Indeed, the words of any national anthem will be pored over for imperialist/triumphalist references so if we ditch GSTK (we won't) we'll end up with something like Phil Coulter's "Ireland, Ireland".

The booing of the national anthem is all a bit strange. All this ‘scouse not English’ stuff is a bit nonsensical- granted, there may well be a few people there who feel like that. But, when I was there for work (must have been during the Euros) the Liverpool supporters there were all eager to get home for whatever England match was on. A case of what people say in public is different to what they do in private. Liverpool was treated very badly by previous governments and the club was also treated appallingly badly as well. Little wonder that this has created ill feeling towards what is perceived to be the establishment. I do think booing the national anthem is all a bit pointless and ultimately doesn’t achieve anything - apart from upsetting those who get angry when they see players not singing it. It’s all a bit silly now.

Booing the national anthem at a football game because of historical, Government treatment is a bit like booing a British Airways plane because the postman missed your house on his route.
