I think McKenna is great, and I hope he is our manager next season 09:55 - Mar 17 with 1889 viewsDubtractor

Clearly he has made some mistakes this season, possibly being a bit stubborn with tactics and selections, but then that is a trait that every single football manager has.

What he has done to transform our club though, and what he'll continue to do if given the chance, is incredible.

This season has been miserable, and I get why people are grumbling, but you've really got to see the bigger picture and look at our progress over the last 3 seasons.

I still want him here next year, but more importantly, I want it decided on now really, he commits, or says he wants a new role - so we have a manager in place for the preseason that will be here for the actual season.

That doesn't happen anywhere though does it, certainly not in management. It's not like there is a window door that slams shut and you can rest easy until July or February.

This summer may be a little less fraught with activity this summer. Amorim may be getting his feet more snugly under the table at Old Trafford and I don't see too much happening elsewhere in the Prem unless a Ange leaving Spurs sets up a domino effect.

The three teams that got promoted are the three teams going down. The same as last year.

This year the points achieved are going to be less than last year. Is this a sign that the gap between the championship and prem is widening.

The two other teams promoted with us started from a higher base, but are still going down.

We are currently the best of the three, starting from a lower base. We may well remain the best of the three and that is some achievement from the players and the manager.

Next year whomever is manager and whoever we have as players we go again. I hope it is Kieran because I honestly believe this has been a massive learning curve for him and the club.

MA and us fans knew this was going to be a tough ask, but we gave it a shot as best we could. Let's try to enjoy the remainder of the season. Technically it is not over yet, but will be at some point.

Then like fans of every club we go through the ringer of post and pre season and whatever that brings.

But we support the Ipswich if we are down or if we are up.

Yes the gap is big

But question, have any of the current bottom three sides played a different way to what got them promoted?

This is why I've said it's wrong to say we've made no progress. If we finish above the other two, that's progress, however limited.

If we storm the Championship next year, and yes that's a big if, then we have progressed further IMO.

Leicester were playing a more pragmatic style under Cooper, which may well have been good enough, as they have got a lot worse under RVN. Lost the last 7 home game without even scoring a goal.

Southampton started the same as last season under Martin, and were crap, and have arguably got more crap playing a much cagier and direct style under Juric, having played 12, won one* and lost 11.

*FFS. Such an Ipswich thing to do.

It's *really* not even a question. Unless McKenna himself wants out, there's no better man to lead us next season. He is rebuilding the club, piece by piece, adding value to the squad and club with every year that passes.

Our squad value is far, far greater than this time last year, with plenty of assets suitable for player trading.

Sure, we'll have learned lessons from this season, but look at Chris Wilder and Sheffield United. He's having a second bite at the cherry and galvanised a fresh group. Even Farke did it at Norwich. Why would we even hesitate giving McKenna next season after all he's done for us?!

Anyone wanting him out doesn't really deserve nice things as a Town fan. They'd probably prefer to be moaning on here every week in the middle of League 1.

It only happens in the sense that a manager signs a long term contract which doesn't have some cheap get-out clause. Which McKenna has done.

Obviously it's only a tiny minority in the scheme of things, but there have been a few threads to that effect, and I just fancied balancing things out a bit!

We certainly have played differently, while retaining our overall style. I know it may not come across on TV but we are more direct at times, we have sat deep and played on the break, played defensively (albeit without much success). We are light years away from (for example) the Russell Martin inflexibility, which is why we’ve at least had a shout at avoiding relegation.

KM is an outstanding manager and clearly the right man for us. He's had a steep learning curve this season and thankfully he is exactly the sort of character who will only improve because of it. IMO, he's disappointed this year but is still quite exceptional.

I do agree with you, and come the summer will be fully behind this.

It's just quite demoralising going through the process in what feels like such a limp end to the season - with barely anything to shout about.

I also hope he's here next year.

This is true. The games when we've been more effective IMO have been the games where we've accepted our underdog status and played more defensively and/or direct (e.g. Spurs away, Chelsea home). When we've gone toe-to-toe we've had impressive spells but without a cutting edge and have usually conceded too easily on the break - fine margins usually favour the team with better players.
