Gout 11:42 - Mar 18 with 2145 viewsBlueOura

Has anybody on here ever suffered from gout? I have recently experienced it, and can only say it is excrutiatingly painful! Right up there with the worst pain i've ever had.

My GP has recommended that I start taking Allopurinol to reduce uric acid levels in my body but I am not overly keen on the idea of taking a drug every day for the rest of my life, that being said I may not have a choice.

If anybody has successfully treated gout through diet or other non pharmaceutical means I would love to hear how you achieved it!

I suffered with it on and off for a year or so before going on allopurinol. Haven’t had an outbreak in the 2 1/2 years since. I tried diet at first but was still getting outbreaks. Doctor said current thinking is that it’s more due to metabolic issues than diet so there’s only so much you can do without resorting to drugs.

I have it this second. Knees and shoulders. It is jeffing horrible and do not wish it on anyone, can hardly walk today.

Booze don't help at all neither does eating loads of meat or basically any food you may enjoy. There is some weird ones to avoid as well like peas and mushrooms, they are purine heavy. I think the highest purine is chocolate, offal and scallops, don't quote me on this mind.

Try to drink at least 2 litres of water per day and avoid fizzy drinks as they are the worst for it I reckon.

Happy gouting.

I was prescribed colchicine, 1 tiny pill per day & advice was, complete the course & watch my diet

I'm not a drinker anyway, so for me, I reduced the amount of pies, pizzas & doughnuts

Haven't lost any weight, but haven't had a flare up of gout nor had to get a repeat prescription for ages

Aspirin also helps (thins the blood)

Have been on Allopurinol for ten years now, it seems to be a pretty safe drug with few if any side effects. I used to get gout about four times a year before that, always in my big toe.

Haven't had it since.

I had it big toe, right foot.....as you say, excruciatingly painful.

Being a bit of a hippie, I am trying these....

So far no further flare up, but I am drinking much more water, eating less filet mignon/ caviar and I can't remember the last time I drank a flagon of port

Drink a lot of tart cherry juice. And get yourself on tablets to prevent gout. Both these things helped me get over it. It’s very painful. Hope you feel better soon

Drinking cider vinegar ' with the mother' is said to help. Allopurinol works for me plus cutting back on some trigger foods like shellfish, beef stock. I found that Marmite set me off due to yeast content. Still drink though. Some hereditary link with either over production or under excretion of uric acid. Hope you find a solution.

Weirdly liver nearly always used to set it off! Shame as I love a liver casserole.

I may also be a bit odd as I never found gout to be as horrific as others seemed to find it; bloody nuisance for sure as you can't walk for a few days, but tolerable.

I take Allopurinol 300mg daily that’s the max dose I believe, certainly keeps it at bay , thankfully I only ever get it in my toes / feet , and I can confirm is is extremely painful , had it in both feet years ago and spent 2 weeks in bed as I couldn’t stand on my feet .
There is another drug called Colchicine and can only be taken for 3 /5 days , beware of this one as it gives you delay belly bad .

I've had it periodically for many years. It is horrible. As others have said, it is triggered by most foods that you like, plus some that are generally supposed to be good for you.
Being a sensible weight, exercising regularly, moderating booze intake and avoiding too much of the worst foods and you're likely OK.
I have resisted Allopurinol on the grounds that I try to follow my own health advice; or, if I took it I'd likely go absolutely bonkers on beer...
One suggestion: there appears to be no link between white wine & gout...

Colchicine is used for when you get an attack, Allopurinol is used as a preventative drug.

As long as you don't get drowned in a barrel of malmsey wine you'll be ok. Whether it's got any connection with gout i have no idea. Dad and brother both had it so took Allopurinol.
Spelling amended.

Correct , although I take Allopurinol daily I can still get gout is for instance someone stands on my foot or worse still if I accidentally kick an immovable object like a table leg whilst nothing on my feet years ago, then it’s Colchicine short term.

I suffered with it for years before starting to take allopurinol and haven’t had an attack since. Tried diet changes etc first but that didn’t work. I only take the pills every couple of days and I have to say that is well worth it compared with the pain I used to endure.

I get it in my big toe and possibly my heel

Tried colchicine to reduce acid level but had a bad reaction to it

Now 'self treat' by drinking plenty of water and if I feel a 'ping' come on cherry juice for which I recommend

I started having increasingly frequent and painful episodes of gout a few years ago. I have a reasonably healthy diet (though I do like the cheese), and I don't like taking pills, but I went on Allopurinol and haven't had an episode in years. Allopurinol seems quite benign, I haven't experienced side effects, and it's the only tablet I take.

Montmorency cherries are the best. Got gout in my big toe. I take allopurinol daily.

Holland and Barrett used to sell the concentrate. Used in making some Belgian style kriek once in my home brewing days

Aspall's organic apple cider vinegar is best, take it with a spoonful of raw (ie untreated) honey, from a local source like a farmer's market.
