Not throwing shade at Delap who is really a rare talent, but I for one don't mind that we will obviously lose him in the off season.

Glad McKenna started with Hirst today. Not sure either of those goals would've happened without the build-up play from Hirst.

Been saying it all season. Hirst holds the ball up do well and brings other forwards into the game do well. His closing dien work rate is brilliant too. I've asking for Hirst to start and Delap to come on for last 30mins against a tired defence.....as well as playing both together st dome point in done games. Yoo little too lste by McKenna tactically.

Big shout out yo our defence today. Do far foung really well.

Second half I'd be going 5-4-1

Hirst is more of a team player than Delap. They are different types of striker.

He is less greedy and brings more players into play

Delap when he learns to pass it will be some player

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Yrs they are. But either Delaps physicality, and raw speed together with Hirsts gulie and ability to hold the ball up and feed other forwards into the game, why the hell hadn't McKenna utilised that at some point this season by playing them together. He's missed a trick there i think.

Probably because we have no extra number 9 sadly, he doesn't want to burn the strikers out

Delap in the last Chelsea game did things Hirst just can't do. Delap is younger and needs to add a few bits to his game but Delap is a level above.

Will really enjoy seeing Hirst more again next year in the champ though.

Have to say, in his limited appearances this season Hirst has really impressed me at the top level. Hasn't looked out of place at all.

Because we have no-one to replace them with?

Hirst's injury also hasn't helped, and presumably it has taken him a bit of time to get to full match fitness even after becoming available again. If he had been fit all season it wouldn't have surprised me to see him start around a third of the games, both to give Delap a rest and to give different problems to different teams. I think that would have seen Delap play more of his games at the top of his game, as I suspect it is tiredness as much as anything else where he becomes a bit more of a lone player.

I hear what you're saying but ( until I jured) Szmodics has played #9 , and do too does Enciso, I understand. So it's not beyond the realms of possibility.

I'm not suggesting playing Hirst : Delap on same side for 90 mins, but he could have tried it at a point in some games. He's too rigid in his approach.

Hirst was absolutely superb yesterday. Whenever the ball came his way (which wasn't too often.) He won his duel, brought others in to play, kept possession. I rate him so highly and pray we can get a full season out of him. He would be the best number 9 in the champ.

Delap as you say though is just an insane talent. The difference between him and Hirst is Delap could drag you through a game on his own, he is that good. And you need that as a team fighting towards the bottom. That passage of play yesterday where he picked the ball up 25 yards from our goal, skinned Trev Chalobah and won a corner was elite striker play. He is a special special talent who could easily go on and be one of the best strikers in the world. This myth that he doesn't pass is getting out of hand as well. Nowhere near as selfish as people here like to make out.

People also need to give McKenna credit. He's taken two strikers with clear potential and pedigree but with really indifferent records/performances at other clubs and turned them into a pair of fantastic strikers. Delap is obviously going to the top but I think people sleep on how good Hirst actually is. He's not looked out of his depth at all this season when he's been fit. A really complete striker and like you say, you'll struggle to find a better 9 in the Championship next season.

Indeed.

It wasn't so long ago that Hirst was being questioned as a championship player due to his record with Rotherham and Blackburn. He didn't even start super well in league one when we had him on loan and he had to wait a while for his first goal. He is a cool profile though. Can run in behind but also link play really well. Superb out of possession as well. Maybe the best we have at the club.

Makes me laugh that the Leicester supporters were generally quite happy to see him go and didn't think he was up to much.

Will be really interesting to see which strikers we go after in the summer. I think we'd all be fine with Hirst being the number one choice but given all his injury troubles, we need someone else at an equal or similar level.

Hirst's link play is better, he brings more out of the players around him, he's also better in the air

I'd happily see Hirst up top and Delap on either the right or left

Broadhead I thought had a decent cameo again although doesn't offer as much cover for the left back

From both a longer term planning approach and with McKenna's philosophy of trying to bring in players that strengthen the starting XI, I suspect (and hope) that McKenna brings in a player who can be considered first choice ahead of Hirst. That then adds quality to the team, and puts us in better shape if we manage to get promoted in a year or two - to have newbie and Hirst as the 2nd and 3rd striker with a new #9 up top.
