Tokyo/Osaka experts 09:17 - Apr 16 with 1623 views | artsbossbeard | Getting a trip sorted for August that will see me with just over a week in The Land of the Rising Sun with a plan to land in Tokyo, spend a few days there and then bullet train it to Osaka and fly home from there. Q: Am I best to spend most of my time in Tokyo or is there enough to do in Osaka to equally split my time between the 2? Looks like, weirdly enough, I can buy the bullet train tix in advance c/o Trainline too. TIA

That bullet train is mental - feels like you are doing 60 mph - but is like 3 times the speed. Get a seat on the right hand of the train going out (for a view of Mt Fuji) and left going back.

Tokyo/Osaka experts on 10:02 - Apr 16 with 1498 views | Lanky | 4/5 days in Tokyo is perfect, and Osaka is great for food/drink and lots to do for a day or two - but it is super close to Kyoto/Nara/Kobe on the train too (you don't even have to get bullet trains, a lot cheaper to get the more 'regular' services from Osaka to those places). I'd advise allotting a day or two in Osaka to popping by Kyoto and Nara (can't speak for Kobe as I didn't go!). I wouldn't buy train tickets in advance, it's very easy to get them at the stations on the day. From what I read online before I went, getting them off external sites can result in headaches.

Kamakura is a really good day trip from Tokyo, but if you have limited time then I would spend it in Tokyo itself. From Osaka you can easily do day trips to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Himeji (Kyoto and Himeji Castle are must see's in my opinion!). If you don't mind an early start and a long day, then Hiroshima is just about doable from Osaka.

That's the reason I'm going - always wanted to go and want to do it before I get senile/infirm. Mrs Beard isn't interested, so presently I'm a solo traveller with Beard Jnr offering his travel partner services but only if subsidised..

Tokyo/Osaka experts on 19:37 - Apr 16 with 1081 views | BathBlue | Just back from 6 days in Japan (6 hour flight for me makes it a little easier!) We did 3 days in Tokyo and 3 in Kyoto. Absolutely brilliant! We walked for more than 10 miles a day and saw a great deal of what we hoped to see! I would recommend Roppongi as a good area to stay in Tokyo. We stayed in the APA Eki Higashi hotel - very good for the price. Little Onsen spa as well. I’m not arty but we loved TeamLab Borderless in Tokyo - an amazing museum without boundaries (hard to describe - Google it!) Let me know if you want any other suggestions - I’ve got a few! Tokyo/Osaka experts on 21:05 - Apr 16 with 1023 views | WeWereZombies | If you find yourself with half a day to spare in Osaka do not miss the aquarium, like no other I have seen. Himeji castle seconded, astonishing place and Kyoto took four or five days of my time, Nara two or three but I did get templed out in the end. Hiroshima is an extremely sobering place (Nagasaki also) but somewhere I think everyone needs to go to. Naoshima, the art island, was great too. Been just over five years since I went and I need to visit again because, despite being there for a month, I never got to Tokyo or the north or Okinawa.

Absolute dream to just walk around Tokyo alone and confused Lost In Translation style.

Tokyo/Osaka experts on 18:09 - Apr 17 with 669 views | KrakenBlue | August will be hot, humid and sticky on another level. First time I went was in Sept and it was grueling at times. Keep your itinary light as you'll get zonked by the heat. On the plus side there are loads of vending machines for some cold sports drinks. I wasn't really a fan of Kyoto, temples were amazing but the place is ruined by tourism. If you want to escape the heat a bit I'd recommend Takayama up in the mountains. It's a bit out of the way but I loved it enough to go back. https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2400.html is a great resource for planning

Would second this about Kyoto. Temples are amazing and there are hundreds of them, but was much more aware of the US tourists arriving at each of them on their coaches and hoping to arrive before/after they did. Evening wise, there werent masses of places to go and also tourists. However, Kyoto station has a fantastic food court at the top though, loads of restaurants. By contrast, didnt feel any of the same re: tourists in Tokyo. Its absolutely amazing., everything youd imagine but more. Bullet train is a must, even if though its more expensive.
