What “Rules” does the fixture super computer have? 10:41 - Apr 23 with 1286 viewsMatt_Netherlands

Looking way ahead to the championship fixtures, does anyone know the rules / conditions that get applied when fixtures are generated?

Some logical ones seem to be….

- Boxing Day - Usually fairly local games but not local rivals (Due to travel and policing). We often seem to have people like Watford, QPR, Arsenal etc.

- Newly promoted sides avoid each other for opening games, newly relegated avoid each other too

- Fixtures start repeating from about January onwards, matches are in similar order once they are replayed but never the exact same

- Seem to remember there being a week fairly early in the new year, when all fixtures are repeated from around three weeks prior - not sure if that still happens though

- Local rivals tend to avoid playing at home on the same day, albeit slightly more relaxed here than in previous years

We Play every team twice, once at PR and once at their ground

If we play at home the lesser East Anglian team will have to play away

Stoke away has to be a on a cold wet Tuesday night in February

Seemed to be a relatively recent thing in the lower divisions to have the furthest away fixtures as midweek ones (I think with the intention of protecting Saturday attendances).

You also will never, or at least very rarely, see a local derby on the first or last day of the season.

Exceptions being London, North-West, Midlands clashes as the permutations can be impossible to avoid. But even so, you wouldn't get Forest playing Derby, Blackburn playing Burnley etc.

You'll never see Town v Nodge on a first or last day.

QPR (A) & Millwall (A) - Midweek. Nailed.

We always seem to play Norwich at home before we play away in recent seasons.

Never really thought about that being a possible reason for us having some horrible Tuesday night away fixtures. Kind of makes sense… but on the other hand is two fingers up to travelling fans!

That's been in place for the EFL for some years now, on the basis the clubs are better off sacrificing a few long distance games to midweek to get better away numbers for the closer games at the weekend.

An old article but nevertheless interesting and probably mostly still relevant.

There seems to be a rule that all midweek fixtures require the away team’s fans to have to travel long distances. Expect mid week trips to Preston or Blackburn, M’boro or Sunderland.

Wasn't it also linked to the new Sky deal where they were going to show most games live on the red button during midweek?

Already covered that!

It's been the way for a few years now to maximise travelling support at the weekends, by putting the relatively further away ones midweek.
