Does it really deserve to get the headlines/coverage it is getting? Was all over Radio 5 this morning when I walked the dogs and I don't get it personally.

I'm in two minds about it. He had clearly become (or gave off the aura of being) bigger than the Corporation, which will never end well. However, it does rather feel that this has been precipitated by Lineker being rather outspoken, with opinions which appear to be diametrically opposed to those of the BBC.
The most recent 'incident' feels like it has been used as the straw that broke the camel's back. I never realised that rats were an antisemitic trope until this whole story broke and, having seen the clip in question, I probably wouldn't have given a second thought to the short inclusion of the rat emoji.
It probably never needed to come to this anyway. Lineker posted the clip, was made aware of the connotations of the rat, and immediately deleted it. That should have been the end of it.
It's a real shame, as the content of the clip itself is very good and extremely relevant.

For reference, this is the clip in question - albeit, it would appear, an earlier iteration without the rat emoji.
I'm not expressing any sentiment on the content alongside the video - I've just selected this version as it was the easiest to find and post here.

Criticise Israeli and settlor actions all you like (as I do) but it seems to me rather naive and stupid for someone like him to repost things about Zionism, something he probably knows very little about.

Absolutely, it is naive for a number of reasons.
One may think that the content of the clip is absolutely right, absolutely wrong, or somewhere in between. But it is very much one side of the argument, and the other side of the argument is not present. In relation to an issue which excites extremely passionate emotions from those who consider themselves to be sticking up for the state of Israel on the one hand, and those who consider themselves to be sticking up for Palestinians on the other.
Roger Mosey (former head of news and director of sport at the BBC) has it right when he (in a perfectly measured way) says:
"If you're working for the BBC... you have to take a wide range of views into consideration and be empathetic to a very diverse set of people.
And that, I think, has not been happening really in his social media posts."
I would also point out that when he last had a spat with the BBC about expressing his political views, he had condemned the the government's words on immigration as being comparable to the rhetoric of Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Ironic then that he should broadcast this rat emoji, either not having the education to understand its significance, or the diligence to check what he's sending to over 1 million people. Plainly such an emoji is comparable to rhetoric from Nazi Germany.

Radio 5 is a BBC channel...what do you expect?
True, I just don't consider it "news", but then I am a grumpy middle aged man who considers very few items that appear in headlines actually newsworthy these days.

Hes entitled to a view. And has not said anything remotely unreasonable. It is absurd that people can be virtually lynched for what was obviously unintended and immediately acknowledged when raised.

Item 1 on the news - Lineker leaving over comments on the genocide.
Item 2 on the news - Netanyahu saying he's going to take over control of what remains of Gaza.
Says it all that that's the order.
I said to my Mrs from day one, when the Palestinians did what they did that they were going to regret it big time. I didn’t think it was going to get quite as bad as it has. But l had a feeling Israel would hit back very very hard.

Yeah. Israel was always planning it. They've been working towards this for a long time, squeezing the life out of the Palestinians and then using extraordinary violence. Their governments have been getting more and more extreme.
It's a disgrace that the west including Britain has supported it. Why are we selling arms to them and flying reconnaissance flights. We should not be.

Which he correctly apologised for - a cartoon rat that he hadn't clocked.
I don't think anyone seriously thinks Lineker is an antisemite or full of hatred of Jewish people.
A public figure who cares that there is a genocide going on has banished from the BBC for supporting Palestinian rights.
Again your last sentence is incorrect, you've just repeated the falsehood. If that was the case he'd have been let go along time.
The reason he has gone is for reposting what he did was reposted, something that contained a deeply offensive antisemtic trope, one which is classic example of dehumanization with historical context.

Oh there will certainly be people who think he’s an antisemite. He’s a targeted figure given how he’s spoken out on various issues. I suspect he isn’t and I would take the immediate deletion at face value, but it’s got nothing to do with me. He’ll get grief as long as he stands up for people. Much like Rashford did.
I can see why he’s making the big wigs at the BBC a bit twitchy. Being outspoken isn’t really an option. Look at how Maitlis has changed and become a lot more challenging in interviews now the BBC shackles are off, which it’s much needed in journalism rather than this both sides platforming the BBC mostly does (Ross Atkins is a rare exception of someone who will actually fact check).
The news here is not that he's leaving the BBC - that's been known for some time.
The news is that he's leaving earlier than had been previously planned and announced and that's because he did something stupid on social media. Worth a mention (because the fact he did something stupid on social media was last week's story) but probably not top story material.

I'd say a more classic example of dehumanisation is the ethnic cleansing and genocide currently being carried out by the failed state of Isreal. But clearly Linekers retweet is a bigger story

I always thought he was going at the end of the season anyway?
Whatever the reason, it’s the end of an era. Not a particularly important one compared to serious stuff that’s going on in the world, but it’s making me feel old as it only seems like 5 minutes since I was watching him rescue our 86 World Cup campaign. His second in that hatrick is still one of my favourite England goals:

I posted this on TWTD on 16 October, based on previous use of disproportionate force by Israel, but I too underestimated the true scale.
"Interesting to note from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs that since the beginning of 2008, and not including the last month, there have been 3,803 Palestinian civilian fatalities in Israel and the occupied territories (a third of whom were women and children), and 177 Israeli civilian fatalities.
If that ratio of fatalities were to be maintained in the current conflict, we could be looking at over 25,000 Palestinian civilian fatalities once it is finally over."
