Restaurant/pub restaurant recommendations 15:54 - May 22 with 2417 viewsthebooks

Thinking of eating out tonight.

Know the regulars: Greyhound, Fountain, Swan etc. Would like to try somewhere new in or just outside the town. Don’t mind what type of food, as long as it’s good.

Any recommendations? Ta!

Bit late now but the Shannon at Bucklesham won't ever let you down and for a bonus point it isn't a Deben Inn!

What's wrong with Deben Inns? They have some nice pubs.

I have no idea. I still don't understand how or why Ed Sheeran is famous.

That movie is a fever dream. How it got made, I've no idea.

It even has the classic pitfall of actors who clearly never been to suffolk who have been asked to do a suffolk accent. They of course just talk like pirates.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Certainly can't claim to have visited every pub in the country or even in the Good Beer Guide, though I know people who have.

I wouldn't put it in my top 20 pubs, and I like Deben Inns, like the food, like the Maybush, used to spend many Friday/Saturday nights down there in summers of years gone by, and the beer is usually fine too.

It's just I think there's loads more pubs that rank higher.

Even only if you judge Suffolk.

To be fair the Fox is better than the Maybush.

The Duck Campsea Ash is very good.

The Greyhound at Pettistree is great for food. As a general pub for a few beers I reckon the Woolpack takes some beating though I agree the Maybush and Ramsholt Arms are both in fantastic locations.

Tbf, I think deben inns get a lot right. Decent pub food, in well presented lovely pubs in great locations.

Newbourne Fox is probably the best of the bunch

Ufford Crown excellent for food (not a Deben Inn)

From my point of view, nothing. But the comments at the start were along the lines of "not another deben inn, they are all the same" and I just wanted to make the OP aware the shannon isn't in the same chain of restaurants. Hope that's ok?

I make it #1 in Suffolk, what’s yours out of interest?

Picking the #1 is always difficult because I'd likely default to Ipswich pubs because I visit those the most and forget about some cracking pubs further afield which there plenty

Like it's hard to look beyond the Fat Cat in Ipswich, but the Dove in Bury is a very good pub, the Nelson in Southwold too, though the Harbour inn is better in the summer for the garden and view. The Walnut in Stowmarket was very good but changed hands not sure what its like now..

But places like the Rumburgh Buck or Cross Keys at Redgrave win CAMRA awards, but I've never visited them.

Fat Cat is ok but it's an overrated smelly hole frequented by teachers, Scout (dib dib dib) masters and new age weirdos - IMHO
