Tuchel - very much the FA's man 11:16 - May 24 with 1365 viewsZx1988

All goes to show why certain names have never ended up in the role over the years.

The FA will always want someone who'll select players based on where they're playing, rather than whether they should be picked.

By the by I'm inclined to agree with Delap's non-selection this time around, but it seems as if Tuchel has very much said the quiet part out loud.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Championship too low brow for selection, yet Toney plays in a pub league and that's fine...

Why? What has he said? See EDIT below. I don't think previous managers have been afraid to pick players from outside the top 6 clubs or from abroad either. Of course players who have played in big matches more often will have shown their ability to play with the pressure. That's a big reason why Man Utd needed to win the European trophy to attract Delap.

EDIT: I see the quote you mean. You think it surprising he would want players to have shown their ability in the Premier League and he is saying that he hasn't done that enough yet? This is why, even without the clause in his contract, Delap was never going to cost a club much more than £30M this summer. Maybe we could have added sell-on clauses etc, though.

You’ve seen the step up required to be successful in the PL, Delap isn’t going to progress playing in the Championship, where he won’t be up against international quality defending. While I don’t really like to see an England manager agitating for a player to move, it’s hardly news to anyone Delap is going to move.

I do see where you're coming from.

However, had Delap had exactly the same season with an established PL side, I reckon he'd have been capped by now.

I disagree.

Can you name any player who got capped for England after playing 1 season or less and scoring 12 goals or fewer with only 2 assists as a striker?

I think Michael Owen had less experience but he had scored a lot of goals and looked a class above in a successful Liverpool team. And if you are going back that far, Steve Bull played with only 1 appearance in the top flight playing for Wolves in the second tier.

Myles Lewis-Skelly made about 5 appearances before getting a call up.

Fair enough, although there was a shortage of left backs available at the time wasn't there? Would people feel that someone else from a lesser club should have been picked ahead of him?

Lol.

You are aware Tuchel has fallen out with almost every club he’s ever been at and left in a blaze of glory?!

I love Tuchel but he’s volatile and anything but a yes man.

A very poorly researched post this.

Doubt it, Lewis-Skelly has a strong case for being the best English LB this season. Meanwhile Delap is clearly behind Kane and Watkins right now, probably Solanke and Toney too.

If Tuchel finds himself foraging in the Championship to fill his England squads then something's gone very wrong!

Wasn’t David Nugent selected whilst in the championship? Not often is it but possible well should be

Toney only had 2 full seasons in the PL, didn't play for one of the big 6 in any high profile games and now plays in a league that's probably the equivalent to League 2 quality, but is seen as more worthy than Delap? That's also not taking in to account his rather dodgy decisions off the field too. Madness!

For the record, I'm happy he hasn't been called up for a full cap, this would no doubt mean that we'd owe Citeh another handful of cash, lessening our profit on his departure.

Sorry, how's he behind Solanke and Toney? He's scored more Premiership goals than Solanke despite playing in a relegated team, and I kicked a ball back to some drunk lads in the park the other day and in doing so was immediately playing at a higher level than Toney is.

Toney was excellent for Brentford in the PL across three seasons, probably their best player. Sure he left for the money last summer but Delap hasn't surpassed the level that Toney signed off at, not yet. Also, while not wanting to champion the Saudi Pro League, it does still contain a host of players who are much more talented than found in the Championship.

Onto Solanke, he scored 19 goals in the PL last season. He was one of Bournemouth's best players. He's had a stop-start campaign with injuries this season but has he been bad? Looking up his numbers now, 15 goals and 8 assists in 44 games. 8 goals and 3 assists in 26 PL games. I'm not sure Delap's shown enough over the season to prove he's already a higher calibre player.

*In their last Championship seasons, Ivan scored 33 goals and assisted 10, Dom scored 29 goals and assisted 7. Think that emphasises why Tuchel is only interested in what these players can do at elite level; Div 2 is just too easy.

Sure, but Tuchel's comment about Liam needing to "find a chance to still compete in the Premier League" before he's considered indicates that it's not about the level players signed off at but the level they're playing now, which he then entirely contradicts by picking Toney. Arguably a competitive game against the might of Andorra and a subsequent friendly might have been a good chance to test whether Solanke and Liam were up to it. But oh well - as someone else highlighted, it might have just saved us owing Man City an add-on fee.

See your point though I think it rather points to Delap still needing a bit to prove, whereas others have already cleared the first and second hurdles. Saka and Rice could decide to join us in July for a change of scene and would still be selected, unless a handful of others began to seriously pull up trees, because they are known qualities in elite footy.

If Delap can repeat his early season form next year then I'm sure he'll get the call. We've had live debates in the second half over whether Hirst should be starting ahead of him!

Yep, and probably the best goal to games ratio for any England striker…

I suspect that Delap would have been in this squad over Toney if it wasn’t for the U21 tournament this summer. He trained with the full squad last time round. They know what he can do. Just a shame he won’t make his England debut whilst a Town player. His next choice of club is key however…

I doubt anyone will learn much about the capability of England players from 90 minutes against pub team Andorra & half a friendly game against Senegal.
