What a player and how times were so different back then. Brilliant read and a fascinating life story.

One of my ITFC heroes.

It is an excellent book. He really opens up about his recent struggles. One of his motivations being to get men talking about their mental health.

I wish him well. He always was a big hero of mine. Of of the few players we had who would regularly make passes on the pitch I hadn’t seen from the stands.

He hasn't aged either.

Always blows my mind that thirteen years after his Town debut, and having been at Spurs for for four years, he returned here for a loan spell and was still only 29 years old.

He was a lovely player on his day. Sometimes could look a bit languid but I was gutted when he left (the first time).

Not gutted enough to boo him when he returned to PR with Spurs, I hope?
Dozzell had a promising first season at White Hart Lane & I remember speaking to a Spurs season ticket holder who found him frustrating as when he was good, he was very good, but injuries played their part. We also rarely think what off field issues a footballer may be having & often expect them to perform at 100% every week.

I was working that day!

The next weekend I saw TS in Mulberry Tree and he asked me very kindly if I was one of 'those c*** booing his brother'. He took some convincing.

Was fortunate enough to have played alongside Jason for South Suffolk and Suffolk along with Sunday teams and stuff with him in my teens back in the day. I was at Northgate and he was obviously at Chantry. We had trials at Westbourne for Sotuth Suffolk I think it was and of course we had to fight like crazy to be picked but JD was to be the nest best thing and got the automatic call up as such.

I played alongside then and thereafter some good footballers but JD was for me always the best footballer I played with. For such a big lad at the age we were he was silky and smooth. His touch at the time was immense and he strength was something else

Wasn’t good to see him having the issues he was reportedly having but now great to see him out the other side

One of my personal ITFC highlights was when he returned to make his second debut for us !

Will definitely give it a read. Always loved Dozzer as a player and he's always been very friendly if you see him about the town these days and say hello to him. Clearly he's had some very tough stuff to deal with and I don't think players were anywhere near well enough supported back in his day. Player welfare does seem to be more of a priority now and the best managers prioritise the mental wellbeing of their players as much as their physical shape.

The section in the book which doesn't align with how I remember it is his transfer to Spurs.

From my memory we offered him a contract extension when his expired, but he ummed and ahhed about signing it ... presumably waiting to see if another club came in for him. (This was all pre-Bosman).

This seemed to drag on for ages, and then one day it was announced he'd gone to Spurs.

In his re-telling he was trying to get some odds-and-ends sorted out with Ipswich when slightly to his surprise Spurs came in for him. He went there by himself and ended up signing that day. when if he'd had some wise counsel (a literal father figure) he would probably have stayed with us. Or at least given it more thought than he did.

He tripled or quadrupled his salary, and, I'm told, took care of his whole family.

Had we signed Marshall before he left he would have stayed, from same source as above, which IIRC Jason himself said on a TV football highlights programme

His debut will always be special for the Chantry Class of 84...
