A lot of people are very smart when they have the benefit of hindsight.
The most likely situation appears to be that we wouldn't have got the deal over the line without agreeing to those terms. Other clubs were interested, we would've had to de-risk our position with salary reductions in the event of relegation and players would have something similar that allows them to get out if they can prove themselves at the level. Its perfectly common.
Ashton wasn't a stupid bloke 12 months ago, he plays the cards he's dealt. If someone said we pay £15m for him and if we go down he'll leave and we'll take a c. £10m profit there's nothing about that deal that looks bad. The irony is most of our signings will have similar clauses, there's probably similar in Ognene's contract but we're not likely to ever learn of them as its Delap who has had a superb season. You could make a strong argument that he's been our best signing yet people are painting it as a disaster. |  | | |

Yeah, it is all about the balance of power in negotiations. It'll be similar this summer if we sign Mubama. To get a young player of that sort of potential with competition from elsewhere you are going to have agree to a clause which may look 'silly' in hindsight. | | | |

Just putting FACT at the end of a sentence or statement does not make it factual- it’s remains just an opinion. It’s quite a lazy thing to do and is just an attempt at limiting discussion or criticism. |
