Sure I read somewhere that he'd signed some sort of pre-contract agreement with them quite a long time ago when things weren't looking so good for Liverpool. As the season was progressing with Liverpool he was trying to get out of it but couldn't end up justifying how much it would cost him. |  |

You can't sign a pre-contract until there is less than 6months to go on your contract and you're joining a club in another country, so that's utter nonsense
The only source I can find for what you've mentioned is on a Facebook page called Football Away days and it doesn't reference any reputable sources whatsoever. [Post edited 12 Jun 13:15]

I suppose "legally" you can't but if you think everyone plays "by the book" then you're naive.
You aren't suppose to "tap" players/managers up are you? Happens all the time. Players contract agreed before any deal has been done. | | | |

The cynic in me thinks that he had that speech prepared and just spent the last few weeks/months practicing it until he was word perfect. That's what I would have done.
The press conference afterwards was in English, which would make sense as he wouldn't have been as prepared for the questions thrown at him.
Good for him though, always nice to see English players going outside their comfort zone. |  |

As it is, I imagine the lingua franca at Madrid is English, so maybe he won't get much opportunity to learn Spanish now he is there.

Indeed, he has had the time, money and opportunity to really intensively learn over the last few months.
I'm just jealous - 3 years into learning Portuguese and whilst I can understand a lot and have basic conversations, I'm no-where near fluent! But then again, I'm twice TAA's age. | |

Sure, tapping up happens and terms discussed etc, but to sign a legally binding pre-contract, as has been suggested, with clauses stipulating a penalty if he doesn't end up signing for Madrid is obviously nonsense | | | |
