I don't think the sign is missable really, so I'd work on the basis that it wasn't 40mph when you crossed.
If you're heading towards Wherstead, the 40mph sign is just as you hit the bridge and the traffic slows anyways. Reckon you're fine. |  |

I very rarely cross the bridge these days, but was heading to Waldringfield for a meeting and came over at around 5pm. I always try and make a note of looking for that sign just as I come over the bridge, and I'm 90% certain it was 60mph.
Hopefully they put it back up to 60 on the basis it was rush hour ... that'll be my excuse anyway, ha! | |

The Wherstead entry slip road heading east is confusing... you can see a permanent metal sign saying 60 when you're nearer the top of the slip road.
Then immediately after the slip road, there's a variable sign which is now at 40. However, the road bends left, so as you join the A14, you're looking at the traffic so you can merge in - all your concentration and focus is to the right not the left, so it is easy to miss that one. | |

That's where I came onto the A14 on Tuesday night and it was 60mph towards Felixstowe at 5:30pm - the variable sign was def 60 at the bridge start.
On the way back, (7:15ish) the 40mph sign was in place on the other side at the bridge start. | |

I always go 30 there and have people overtaking and undertaking me - don't think people realise it is 30 as not many signs up [but with lampposts and no signs that means it's a 30]
