Qatar has officially closed its airspace 16:48 - Jun 23 with 1932 viewsTresBonne

For people more clued up on either aviation or war than I am,

What does this mean? To me, it doesn't sound good...

Probably the Americans suggesting it as a precaution.

Want to be able to more easily identify shizzle flying in that direction towards their base if needs be.

Qatar has got an airbase which is used by US / RAF among others - Al Udeid Air Base. It may help limit attacks on it or from it . . . hard to say.

Worth noting though that Qatar has only had it's own airspace since Sept 22, so this is probably a new situation for them as well!

BBC has just reported:

The BBC understands that there is "a credible threat" to the US-run Coalition Air Operations Centre at Al-Udaid in Qatar.

The country has temporarily closed its airspace and I’ve been told the airbase is at a state of high readiness.

The threat is believed to come from a potential Iranian missile attack.

Al-Udaid is a massive base outside the Qatari capital Doha and is home to US Centcom’s headquarters for all its air operations in the Middle East, where British military personnel also serve on rotation.

A lot of considerations here. Some reports say most US forces have been evacuated from the al Udeid site (difficult to know what sources to rely on for reliability and credibility when it comes to military logistics), but Trump gave a speech there earlier in the year - in front of a big banner saying Peace through Strength, ironically. So there is some theatre value in it as a target.

But, this is a air base on Qatari soil which is also the primary base for the Qatari airbase. With other nations on rotations. This is not some small base in Iraq/Syria where the theatre of conflict means response from the nation state is all but impossible. Pulling Gulf countries into this is surely self-defeating from Iran.

That said, Qatari air defence is strong, still credible any limited missile attack will be intercepted pretty easily. Iran have to be seen to retaliate, but will be looking for an off ramp, so a limited strike which they can sell as a win domestically is well within their modus operandi.

That will (possibly) result in the other Arab countries firing missiles at Iran.

Unless Iran is doing what they've done previously and informed the US before they actually fired them.

This is exactly what i was thinking. (Informing the US beforehand)

"No casualties" say Qatar.
"Glorious Victory" say Iran.

Sounds like a setup initiated by Iran to save face?

I could be very wrong :-)

Flights will probably be diverted to Mogadishu, Somalia for hub transit to ongoing destinations.
It's the safer option (gulp!).

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Also depends whether the USA is prepared to accept that as a compromise, or if Trump feels it's a loss of face.

I'm not going to second guess Trump, I'm just hoping this was a negotiated bit of theatre. We haven't had any news from Iraq yet where Iran also claimed a strike.

I'm sure that's Iran's thinking,

Then the mad mullah terrorist will tell the Iranian people we hit the Americans hard, that will teach them a lesson.

Media are saying the US was pre-warned, but that won’t matter to Trump.

He will want to strike back again. Once he’s stopped calling people names that is

Just been watching it. This all looks like a bit of theatre smothered in rhetoric to me. Bit of show, plenty of threats. I suspect it’ll fizzle out

However the threat of something going horribly wrong is high. By that I mean the death of US subjects. Other nationalities killed? It wouldn’t matter to Trump or the Mullahs. Not important in the great scheme of things.

The big question is at what point will Iran acquire a nuclear bomb? A year? Five years? Sadly I think they will and I wouldn’t put a penny on them not using it or Israel using theirs first.

‘Normal’ leaders would now say “you’ve both had your turn” now lets deescalate.

However a 4 year old is in charge in the USA and just last week he said he didn’t care what the intelligence community said, he would act upon his instinct.

Sadly EG you are right. And that’s the big worry. He really is a simple bully. Unlike Putin, I never get the feeling he applies thought, listening skills or much else to what he does.

You can imagine playing chess against Trump and him sweeping all the pieces off the board after about half a dozen moves as the brain empties.

He reminds me of the last government who’d ’had enough of experts’. Scary.

Not convinced that calling the response "weak" and then thanking them for the warning is growing up. It's undermining the whole point of the choreography.

Israel and the US have got everything they want, it's not that surprising they are happy with peace now. Hopefully it'll come and it'll hold, but let's not make it out as some altruistic change of heart.

Ceasefire agreed apparently.

He’ll claim full credit of course and demand that Nobel Peace Prize (again)

Of course, this is Israel agreeing a ceasefire…

That's great news of course.

What about Gaza though.

Edit: Seems Trump decided it and then had to work out the details as they were still attacking each other most of the night and he gave the IDF 12 more hours to attack Iran than he gave Iran to attack Israel.

Yeah, ceasefire is the usual Israeli type right now.

Still attacking Iran and telling their own citizens to shelter in place due to potential retaliation.
