Farewell Bryan on 17:18 - Jun 24 by bluefunk | A string of unbelievable players? |
To be fair there has been a fair string of them ... Dean Bowditch, Andre Dozzell, Teddy Bishop, very difficult to believe they were all destined for the very top! More seriously, nobody can work with more than they are given and Klug has been involved in our academy when it did bring through some very decent players. When we were in League 1 and struggling in the Championship running everything on a shoestring while West Ham and Norwich both had academies that were better run, it was always going to be an uphill battle. I am sentimental so I am sad to see him go but the important thing is that we get the academy run well. Crewe and Southampton have been able to bring through very top players whilst operating at lower levels.

Farewell Bryan on 17:11 - Jun 24 by ArnieM | Interesting how scum are recruiting all our old boys in an attempt to reignite their fortunes .... |
Why do you always make everything about them? you're obsessed! Why not just acknowledge his devotion over the past 50 years

That's a very harsh response to that comment.

Farewell Bryan on 19:03 - Jun 24 by football | he's going to the scum?? If that is so, hope he fails |
Think people seem to think he's joining them imminently. He's absolutely not, and may never. Certainly not before September.

That seems a graceful and grown up position to take on it.

Farewell Bryan on 18:21 - Jun 24 by PhilTWTD | Think it's worth pointing out that Bryan hasn't been in charge of the academy for nine years, so not his role to 'go along' with Evans's lack of interest. Despite relative lack of funds, the academy actually was producing players - even if a number of them ended up elsewhere - as well as coaches and other staff - which was part of his remit - prior to the takeover. People like Humphreys, Baggott, Gibbs and Marcelo Flores were all products of that later period, some from the team which reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final. |
but we know from winning it as recently as 2005, success in that comp doesnt mean anything anymore, how many of that team went on to become mainstays in any football team, let alone our own. whilst Southampton who lost, had Walcott, Bale, Lallana, Nathan Dyer... I think the emphasis on academy/youth teams has changed from simply having a nice group of players in a team learning stuff & winning some things, to no we need to produce 2-3 quality players out of this, that we can either sell for lots of money, or use in our squad as a direct replacement for buying in someone for lots of money. I dont feel the past 20 years now, weve been doing that, for sure theres a variety of reasons for it, lots of it outside our control, some it very much in our control, and we'll always be a club whose they could have been it players get poached before we get chance to realise their true value. but the definition of madness is to carry on doing the samethings and expecting different results.
