All speculation, but if Axel actually had a PL move on the table... 12:04 - Jun 25 with 1546 viewstractorboy1978

Or a remotely appealing one anyway, surely:

1. His agent would have leaked it to the press
2. He wouldn't have been bothering to entertain a move to Trabzonspor

He's out of contract on Monday, surely this gets resolved 1 way or another pretty soon?

Always difficult to trust anything that comes out of Turkey, it's hard to know from any of the reporting just how close a move there was for him, but once you've gone there you're pretty much shot at elite level so perhaps his options are dwindling.

Lets be honest there's generally only 1 thing that takes players to Turkey. He would literally be earning an average local annual salary daily (rather than fortnightly here, which is obviously SO tough to live off).

Not quite, unless we release him (which we haven't as he's on the retained list) he'll move to a rolling contract

I've thought for a while that we are his best route back to being a PL regular. I just don't see that another club at that level is going to offer him any more than a shortish term deal as a squad option at best. As far as I know, he hasn't even been linked anywhere else other than Trabzonspor yet?

Also, the role he has established himself in here is perhaps somewhat unique. Do many others play with a hybrid RB/RCB?

You would think he won't move to a top 17 club because he won't be a starter. Which leaves the only better option than us the three promoted sides who might like to pick him up on a free.

But they may baulk at length of contract given his fitness issues whereas because we work closely with him we are prepared to offer more?

I'm still hopeful he may re-sign but hope this gets resolved fast either way.

Have we actually offered him a new contract?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Yes - club confirmed when they announced the retained list.

Rolling contract? Never heard of that in football (when a contract expires) and am happy to be proved wrong but don't think that would happen. Why would anyone pay a footballer on a rolling basis out of season when he is keeping his options open for other clubs.

He will either sign a new deal or not. There won't be a rolling contract involved I'm sure.

That's highly unlikely. He'll be a free agent from 1st July and out of contract.

So he's basically keeping his options open for a bit before deciding whether to sign it or not.

Yeah, he's been sat on our offer for weeks. Guess his agent has been working hard to see if he can get something better elsewhere.

Hmm, in that case I wonder if we might withdraw the offer because he's not committed to us? If it been weeks, that's not good. We need to know where we stand and if we need to buy someone else. I can understand him wanting to explore his options but there has to be a time limit. Weeks spent looking around for a better offer suggest he isn't keen on ours or the fight to return to the Prem.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

We would be mad to do that. He's a quality player, it's still relatively and we have plenty of cover at RB for a few games if we need to go out and sign a new one.

Can see this getting resolved quickly once players are back for pre season.

Truly impaired.

Pretty standard practice for an out of contract player really. I would've thought we would want a decision 1 way or another pretty sharpish though as we'll need to start looking at alternatives as you say.

Don't blame him for shopping himself around. It is a short career and his contract offer is likely a lot less than what we signed him on. Certainly if you you believe the wage he is on according to online sites like capology

Yeah I was just playing devil's avocado, I want him to sign too. But I can see why Ashton might be getting twitchy. It's not ideal to have this dragging on, so I hope you're right.
