every england manager who's made it to a final has been knighted, and a couple who haven't, so not that surprising!

Now, you'll need to sit down for this. The Beatles have split up, and Queen Victoria is dead. Don't even ask about Queen Elizabeth II.

I was going through the list in my head for England Managers who have been knighted. I have: Walter Winterbottom Alf Ramsey Bobby Robson Gareth Southgate Think that's it - although obviously there's time for Big Sam and his 100% win record :-)

"But the former Middlesbrough manager, who received his knighthood on Wednesday for services to English football, says he does not miss being in charge of the team" I think 'Middlesborough' should have been 'England'. However, I'm sure he doesn't miss being in charge of Middlesborough either.

I don’t miss Southgate as England manager tbh. Best squad of players since 1966 and can’t even win a goldfish at the fair

He took us to two Euro finals and a World Cup semi and quarter. That's good going however you slice it up, even if the football was rather pragmatic. I'm not sure it's unequivocally the best squad we've had since '66 either. We've had no world class centre backs under Southgate and only one world class central midfielder, and he wasn't world class in 2021 when we made the final of the Euros. People scoff at the 'golden generation' of the 00s but we had the likes of Ferdinand, Terry, Ashley Cole, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Owen, Rooney - that was a seriously talented crop of players but no manager ever properly got a tune out of them and aside from one Euro semi, we really underperformed. For me, we had more genuinely world class players in that era than now. People also forget the context around Southgate's tenure. When he took over, the nation was more or less done with international football. I'd go so far as saying public opinion sat somewhere between malaise and outright hatred. Years and years of disappointment, a perception that the players didn't care, he inherited a shambles. He managed to make people care about England again, which was no mean feat. He also did it with class and dignity, with the squad mirroring his approach of showing a bit of humility and not being afraid to speak up for what they feel is right. No mean feat in the modern game. His successor isn't exactly doing a great job thus far with the same group of players either.

There's a lot of people who still haven't got over the fact that sometimes in football the other side try quite hard to win too, and sometimes manage it, which is obviously Southgate's fault. Maybe he encouraged them, or something? And then there are all those people who are still cross that he let some black players take penalties.
