Has anybody else's handwriting gone to absolute s*** in recent years?
I wrote inside a card today and looked at it and thought 'Blimey, I can barely read that myself.'
Years of having to do all my work digitally using templates, drop down menus has probably eroded this skill and whenever I write now, it's scribbled notes leaning on my car steering wheel or hastily written shopping lists to put in my back pocket.
I've never had amazing handwriting but at least I felt it was legible. |  |

I always had terrible handwriting. Used to get into a fair amount of bother with it at school. Using a fountain pen (compulsory anyway from 11) helped, but not much.
Having to use my signature with work a lot that was the first to go - collapsed to a drunken line with squiggles. Then went the rest. Barely legible scrawl. Not good. I blame computers taking over the written word and decrepitude. Mostly decrepitude if I’m honest.
Mrs C was a teacher and writes like one. Easy to read, not tooo joined up. You can always spot one by their writing. [Post edited 16 Jul 9:27]

From being the last person in my year to acquire a pen license (LOL) my writing has never improved, these days I struggle to understand why the focus in education isn't shifting towards tech, coding and design rather than getting kids to practice a skill that's been redundant for near on 15 years.
I've been playing loads of darts lately and it's made me realise how horrendous my mental maths has become over time. However with new digital scoring systems there's little need to worry about that as well. |  | | |

I hear your GB. Mine has always been sh1t to be honest, and I can't say I've noticed it worsening but then its very difficult to go down from such a low base.
As for leaning on my car steering wheel, I feel like I write 90% of greetings cards I give out in my car, normally having just stopped en route to an event to buy said greeting card. Normally weddings or birthdays, I really should be more organised. |  | | |

The brain is getting the message it's not needed anymore so it disconnects.
Need to drive somewhere? Sat nav has got you covered so you don't have to look out for landmarks, read road signs.
Recurring calendar apps mean you get alerts when birthdays are coming up or when your MOT is due.
We rely on smart phones to capture images, not our brain memory.

My handwriting was never great to begin with but yep, another once essential skill being lost collectively via modern convenience and technology.
Along with spelling, grammar, map reading, using actual spatial awareness to park rather than relying on sensors and cameras. In another generation driving itself might be a lost art.
Playing actual musical instruments becoming more a niche thing too as electronic production takes over. How many traditional bands are filling the charts these days? Not many, and those that do are usually legacy artists who've been around for decades. Harrumph, old man yells at cloud etc. |  |

Yep. Was always poor but now much worse and I've only ever really used capitals to write.
I've also found I can't write as quickly as before which is really noticable when I'm taking notes in an interview for example.

I feel your pain Guthrum. I'm a lefty and my form teacher used to force me to write with my book straight on the desk, not at an angle. Do people not realise that writing towards your body rather than away from it is really uncomfortable and makes your handwriting scruffy?. 🙄

My mother-in-Law (and my missus) is left handed and 60+ years ago at school they used to tie her left had to the chair to try and make her write with her right hand! Was the done thing in those days apparently.
We used to have left handed cheque books for the missus, left handed notebooks, scissors, among other things.
