How's traffic in Ippy? 08:31 - Jul 18 with 1253 viewsGeoffSentence

Looks pretty clear on google maps and yesterday I went into Town at half four returning just before 6, traffic was really light both ways. One of joyful blip of traffic calmness or are people adapting to the bridge works?

It's the simple fact that the schools are starting to break up. It makes a huge difference, and really shouldn't tbh. Glad I don't drive though!

Dreadful all week but fine today. I think people have just given up by Friday.

Yesterday had to drive to London from Kesgrave, leaving 3pm. Took about 35 mins just to get as far as Copdock - that was going through Ipswich rather than around A14 and bridge. Google Maps said this was about 5 mins faster. Yuck though.

So if I want to drive to the Charlton match at Col U in a couple of weeks, starting from north Suffolk. Which way should I go? Maybe inland and down the A140? Thoughts?

As long as you avoid morning and evening rush hour it's fine.

And as someone else has said, Fridays are always fine as the whole country seems to wfh!

I'm not sure how long the bridge works are running for so check that first. But generally I just punch it into Google Maps and let it decide.

This, and a little tip.

Google maps often doesn’t find the quickest route. However, there is an option called “Avoid Motorways” and I have discovered it doesn’t mean avoid motorways, it means “find some smaller roads”. So my advice is use Google Maps but toggle the “Avoid Motorways” on and off to see if it can find a quicker route.

This reminds of a similar 'check your settings' experience I had with Google Maps once.

Was driving to Kent from Suffolk. On approach to Dartford Maps was telling me to divert via A13 and cross the river at Blackwall Tunnel. Despite no evidence in front of me I assumed there must be a problem with the bridge and took the suggested route.

Late realised I had "avoid tolls" selected. Doh. An unnecessary 45 mins added to the drive.

Can't imagine how ugly that would have been today now that there are also tolls on Blackwall! Thanks for that by the way, Mr Khan.

You have to pay to go through the Blackwall Tunnel now, so if you make this mistake again it would be all the way to the Rotherhithe Tunnel!

Ipswich isn't exactly overrun by private schools is it, so you might have to rethink that one, but you're on the right tracks 😉

I'd go down the A140 and then across to the A12 via Sproughton, Washbrook and Copdock. That'll take the A14 and the Copdock Interchange out of the equation nicely! Obviously, that depends on how long the works on the Orwell Bridge are going on for.

Rush hour traffic becoming lighter when the schools break up isn’t just down to kids getting a lift half a mile up the road.

Some go to a school that isn’t near them, then there’s teachers, other people who work term-time only… plus the fact people take time off when the schools are out so they can go on family holidays etc.
