Brentford closing in on Omari on 13:20 - Jul 18 by blueasfook | What does he owe to McKenna? He was sold a dream of a joining a club bidding to cement itself in the premier league. We went down with a whimper. I'd be ringing my agent every hour if I was him. |
Exactly. Everyone assumed he wouldn't come here after we went up because he'll be off to a bigger club. If anything it can be argued that we owe him one for joining us so quickly after we secured promotion rather than taking time to assess options etc Omari doesn't owe anyone anything. He's a young man who has a decision to make about his career

I wasn't prepared to decide he was likely leaving until there were actual, concrete offers being made. Not two weeks or more ago, like some people. Now there is a clear process and an interested club prepared to put money on the table. So there is a logic to it.

Brentford closing in on Omari on 13:12 - Jul 18 by blueasfook | Beeb reported at the time we paid £20m with a further £2.5 performance-related add-ons. Assuming maybe half of those triggered (a guess seeing as we dont know what they are). So £21.25m investment. Also assuming Chelsea have a 10% sell-on clause, then we'd stand to make around £12.35m if he goes for £35M. More obviously should he go for closer to £40m. If he goes for less than £35m then questions need to be asked. |
Based on the figures in Phil's report (since your post), if he is sold for £35 million, we make a profit of £9.375 million. If sold for £40 million, the profit would be £13.125 million.

Brentford closing in on Omari on 12:56 - Jul 18 by ArnieM | Bigger fool him if he goes to Brentford. Likely relegation battle for them this season i think. But I'll wish him good luck. I think Town are wanting this one over line and to use the money for our targets, which I Hope it includes a proven striker... |
I don't think it is particularly foolish. After all, going to a team which got relegated hasn't done him any harm this summer. Another season in the Prem is another season in the Prem, on the big stage, in contention for England selection.

Brentford closing in on Omari on 13:35 - Jul 18 with 1137 views | Horsham | Don’t want him to go but it’s virtually inevitable he will and hopeful it’s a quick clean deal that brings a lot of money into the club. Critically it happening now rather than a few weeks down the line pretty much enables Ashton to start pulling the trigger on potential incomings now the bulk of the selling is done.

Ah right I was being conservative with the sell-on fee that Chelsea would get. I had it at 10%. According to Phil it's 25% :(

Both tidy profit for a player most thought we had no chance of actually buying in the first place. I'm surprised Phil says we met all of Chelseas add-ons though - couldn't have been particularly hard ones to reach.

40 million perfect we can get 3 very good players in, in the areas we need to strengthen. Like we did with Dyer in the day. And the parachute money we'll some of it may come in handy in January. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

But I am puzzled when I keep reading that Brentford see him as a replacement for Mbuemo as they are quite different players. Maybe Omari could adapt to play a more direct type of game, but the contrast in physique suggests that Brentford haven't really lined him up as a direct replacement.

Brentford closing in on Omari on 13:14 - Jul 18 by Warkystache | There's easily players in the league above who are better and who we could afford? If selling Omari means we can strengthen midfield and get in a good striker, I'm happy. Chappers is a very good No 10 as is Sammie. Can't help but think a couple of quality signings are imminent. |
I meant there's not a player in the Championship who couldn't be prized away for this sort of dough. As in its gutting to lose him, but such is life as a Championship club. Dibling at Southampton is the only exception to that I imagine, but if a club stuck £35m - £40m on the table for him I'd imagine it would be hard to turn down.

Hopefully he will have a 35 million relegation clause in his Brentford contract. Then we can buy him back after Brentford are relegated and we're promoted next year for 35 million minus our 25% sell on..

In his case, I doubt he'd move. Seems like a very introverted guy from the bits ive read about him. Did a few months at Chelsea and hated being away from Southampton, so moved back sharpish. Not to say he hasn't matured since then, or wont in the future.

No one can predict what will happen.

Think his season really nosedived as well. Can't see any club wanting to spend £30m+ on him as a bench open. If he can recapture his early season form from last year, he'll be a very good championship player

Good luck to him. I'll be watching his career with some pride that Ipswich made him a better player. He will do well at Brentford, who will then sell him for a bigger fee (also some more money for us). Brentford have a great track record for selling top strikers (Neal Maupay, Said Benrahma, Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney) and still continuing to be successful. But £35m-£40m at this stage in our clubs history is perfect, it allows us to bring in a couple of quality permanent signings. It will also help us with attracting a top youth player (or 2) from PL teams - ie look how OH's career progressed after a season onloan here.

Yes, clubs, for players are merely stepping stones aren't they.... I'm gradually changing my mindset about it all. But it doesn't come easy, coming from a different era in the game, I'm afraid.

Oh, I agree, to a large extent. However, the difference being that back in the '70s and early '80s, Ipswich Town was a destination for brilliant and ambitious players. A team consistently at the top of the First Division, winning trophies. Other clubs were the stepping stones on the way to our door. It's as much a function of our lower position nowadays as the changing patterns of football. Even Brentford themselves are a stepping stone, various players and a manager having moved on from there to better pastures this summer. Until and unless ITFC can re-establish ourselves in the upper reaches of the top tier of English football, that is going to be our lot. Only amplified by the frenzied transfer environment (huge fees, limited time windows, Sky Sports News, fan expectation, desperate managers, impatient investors) which exists now and didn't to the same extent then.

Players have always wanted to play for bigger clubs with more chance of winning trophies.
