Burnley, Leeds, Sunderland - Just 4/22 signings from English leagues 17:56 - Jul 22 with 1466 viewsBellevue_Blue

Interesting to compare our business with the promoted three this year. It is noticeable that between them Burnley, Leeds & Sunderland have made 4 domestic signings and none of them played in the Championship last year.

Sunderland - Adingra
Leeds - Longstaff
Burnley - Tuanzebe & Walker

For what it's worth I think we absolutely did the right thing in beefing up our squad with proven domestic talent but it will be interesting to see how they get on!

No, we needed a mix or blend of both. I didn't agree with spending GBP130-140M with no players from the top European leagues. That is where the value is an lot of the time. I hated the push back on saying we can't get players with PL experience in, wasn't asking for that but more like some of what Sunderland have done.

Sounds like we have started to acknowledge that now at least even if we were a bit behind.

Technically one of Burnley’s came from the Championship but otherwise yes, it’s quite the contrast!

When will Opie realise.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I would push back on that a tiny bit. We did get players with PL experience. O'Shea had played multiple PL seasons, same with Philips, Ben Johnson, Enciso, Godfrey etc and without question, they would have all been close to the highest earners last season.

Three of them just didn't work out and one wasn't around long enough to really help us.

Lots of lessons learned though you'd hope!

No I understand that, I just remember hearing lots of pods and stuff when people were saying you can't get players with PL experience what do your expect us to do. Or I didn't hear anyone complaining when we went up with English players.

That was just never apples to apples for the top flight and what we were about to spend last summer. My point always was to go to the top leagues abroad and seek out talent that would come to the PL, promoted clubs this year have proved that's possible.

I think the problem for us last season was we lost the access to Brightons data / matrix thingy for scouting players. Thus season we've got it back again, with notable shift towards the foreign market. McKenna wasn't previously keen on this avenue i understand. I'm really pleased hes reviewed that approach.

I am confused by the profile of player KM actually wants.

We were informed that it was correct that he wanted a certain type of plaher in regards to understanding and being able to speak English, so that itself reduced the freedom of signing from abroad.

Then we now see him saying we need to widen our searches.

So I'm just intrigued about who is in charge of the profile of player we are after. KM. Ashton or werhun.

We had however long to use it the season we got promoted and identify the players we would look to sign if we got promoted. Get a list of names for each position on a scrap of paper before we lost access.

Leeds will stay up,

I hope not. Infact, from a selfish point-of-view, I don't want any of the promoted teams staying up. It would make our efforts last season seem worse than they actually were!

It would be better for football if at least one survived, but I can't see it happening.

Burnley, along with Brighton, Wolves & Man City apparently have more non homegrown players on their books than they are allowed to include in their squads.

Have you noticed that the foreign players we have signed both speak very good English

Opposite for me. If we were to go back up I hope at least one of those promoted teams are up there still rather than the same 17 who will only be stronger with each passing season.

Whilst I get Brighton have profited hugely from their database, it's about characters and whether they suit our style of play also. Given how long we knew we were going down and that midfield exits were happening I am amazed we haven't got any other CM's through the door yet, ditto a striker.

I am aware

I did however say reduced not removed our ability to sign from abroad.

But also kipre had already spent 10 years in the UK and Azor comes from a country that has an approx 90% level of English speaking proficiency
