If we get Hackney our midfield is stronger than last season 11:18 - Jul 29 with 3842 viewsPacittiJohn

and if we get another striker to support Hirst our attack will be stronger as well. Delap was too selfish, and did’t knit the team together as well as Hirst can. Also, think Clark and Philogene could surpass Omari?

And yet a trait of a quality striker is being selfish.

When a goal scoring opportunity presents itself yes. Ignoring team mates with a simple 5 yard pass and then running and losing the ball against the defender not so much.

BTW. Delap is a great striker. He will also end up imo being one of England's best ever strikers.

But for what we as a club needed. The type of striker he is didn't help us. That doesn't take away however what he is as a striker.

Indeed. Much as I am a big fan of Hirst, Delap is going right to the top of the game I expect, he's got all the attributes to be a world class centre forward. Hirst is a very good player, one I think can make the step up to the Prem if he continues to develop, but he's not going to reach the heights of Delap. There's no second striker signing we can make that leaves us in a better position than we had last year with Delap and Hirst on our books.

I think last year proved he cannot make the step up to the premier, he looked out of his depth. Delap is a much better player but I didn't like his general play (also tripped over his own feet quite a lot)

100%, Delap was slightly irritating at times,
But 99% of strikers just think about scoring that's their life nothing more nothing less,

How did last year prove that exactly? He was injured for the first few months of the season and once he was back he didn't play loads of football. However, his minutes to goal contributions ratio was pretty decent when he did play. He got 4 goal contributions in 649 minutes in the Prem, that's one every 162 minutes. That's pretty good so I'm not really sure he was anywhere close to out of his depth.

If we had had 50% possession in the majority of our games last season then he would have scored even more, as well as assisting for the wingers and 10 to score.

It was the midfield losing the possession battle that really cost us last season.

We'd have done even worse without Delap last season so I can't agree that he didn't help us.

Can see where you’re coming from with Delap, but I think his selfishness was mainly borne out of necessity as had to defend deep for the majority of the season and he was very isolated.

I actually think he did well to achieve all that he did as we were rarely able to transition from that deep in enough numbers to support him.
Left with a choice of laying it off into a congested midfield or turning, puffing his chest out and trying to create something, he invariably chose the latter.

Exactly. Those who deride Delap & think we'd have done better last season with Hirst starting regularly instead simply don;t understand pro football & how outclassed we were.

With how poorly we did it's not a massive reach to feel we'd have potentially as a team done better than what we did.

For all the comments about midfield not being advanced enough to support delap.. that's mainly because when he got the ball he was already driving forwards rather than awaiting his team mates spraying the ball around etc which is what hirst does and other forwards of that ilk.

That's not delap and no one is saying delap should be it either. He's what I'd call a typical striker. We've never used a typical striker under KM.

Anyways. Think this one is definitely a believe what you want moment. There's no winner on either side of the fence.

Main thing is. We got to see delap early on in his journey and it's financially helped us.

I just did a check on thier goals to minutes on the pitch ratio

Delap played 2612 minutes for 12 goals = goal every 217 mins
Hirst played 649 minutes for 3 goals = goal every 216 mins

Given that a lot of Hirst's minutes were off the bench (21 of his 26 appearances coming that way) I don't think that's too shabby.

Delap is far better than Hirst, Hirst a great fit for how we play and I really like him but we don't need to talk Delap down for that to be true

Yer he was excellent.
