According to Nixon.

Ipswich push hard for McBurnie

By Alan Nixon

Ipswich Town are pushing hard to win the race for striker
Oli McBurnie - ahead a pack of rivals.

The relegated Tractor Boys have come on strong for free
agent McBurnie after lining up the sale of Nathan
Broadhead to Wrexham.

McBurnie has already been in talks with old clubs
Swansea and Sheffield United as well as Hull City.

Ipswich may offer the best footballing chance for him as
the Scot looks to join a promotion chasing outfit.

Kieran McKenna is trying to put a squad together to go
straight back up and the target man with a prove record
is a priority.

Spanish clubs are also keen on McBurnie after a year
with Las Palmas but Ipswich are emerging as favourites.

Who knows if this ends up being a question for Town or not but, if it does, I'd be a bit reluctant to go for the moral jugular straight up. I don't know the guy or how he lives now but I do know, as most of us probably do, that early 20s to late 20s is quite the development curve. People change, mature, add other dimensions to their lives that smooth the jagged edges.

Exactly, people do bad things they get punished, some learn from their mistakes others don't and get stuck in a cycle of rinse and repeat. Sometimes it's down to people's circumstances or because they're not wired up correctly or just pyschos who enjoy hurting others.

But I do find the black and white with no shades of grey nature of online life crazy.

If Sheffield United are pushing to sign him back there can't be that many issues about his character. I haven't heard many character problems over last few years of his career

Drink driving obviously a massive issue, but that was over 5 years ago now - he's not a serial offender so hopefully has learned from it

Didn’t they sign Ched Evans though?

Not sure when the pitch invasion was when Forest fans came on and taunted and attacked the Sheffield United players, but I certainly wouldn't hold that against him after what happened to Billy Sharp

He was also found not guilty for this.

You're surprised some people would rather we didn't sign a drink driving thug with a very patchy record at this level? You must be very easily surprised, great to buy for on birthdays "Ooh, some socks! What a surprise!".

His character at clubs has repeatedly been called into question, and he’s a drink-driving asshole.

Would hate to have him here.

Give it a rest mate. His character isn’t in question. Yes,he has done some stupid things. But he must be a half decent guy plenty of clubs interested apparently. Drink driving is stupid, granted, but that was years back and he has obviously learned his lesson there.

No, but I've not been done for drink drinking or assault. Which makes me like the vast majority of people I'd imagine.

Had a no goals in 28 games in the Championship a few seasons ago as well that you glossed over. Only managed 3 goals last season. 68 league goals in 292 league games across his career is hardly prolific, worse than 1 in 4. He doesn't have Hirst's all round game to compensate for the relative lack of goals either. Even if he wasn't a dickhead, he's not someone I'd hope we'd be in for.

Good post.

Same here, but you have to learn to let people put their wrongs right. And in recent times he has addressed his past issues.

He's gone about 3 years without anything happening, bit early to be claiming he's made amends. He's had too many black marks against him for me. I also don't especially rate him as a player so even without all the off field issues I wouldn't be particularly interested.

From that Guardian article:

"...obviously I’ve had my past and kind of attracted that side of it. I kind of complain, but I can’t have it both ways.” He was found not guilty of assault after a pitch invasion in May 2022 and the year before was handed a caution after an altercation in the street, when someone confronted him.

“He had actually gone for my missus,” McBurnie says. “Have a go at me as much as you like, but it’s her. I should have just, like [left it]. I’m out in Leeds, it’s normal: I’ve had that since I was 16. But she’s new to it, doesn’t understand this world, you know? She’s like: what’s going on? There are three lads. Of course it’s [scary]. She’s only five minutes from home, where she wants to feel safe, and three lads go at her. Again, I was probably in the wrong, but I’m just a normal person, you know?

“‘He’s a footballer, he gets paid a lot of money so he should never react how a normal person reacts.’ I get it. I completely get it. I understand we’re in a privileged position but in the heat of the moment you make errors of judgment. ‘People’s role model …’ Never have me as your role model... Here [Las Palmas], I don’t have that. I’ve also grown up a bit: I’m a father, I have to.”

People make mistakes, usually it’s the people trying to project they’re perfect that are the biggest weapons. Often sociopaths .., you know the type.

Our leader didn’t think gay people should be a thing…, nobodies perfect…, as for his record, he’s played more top flight games at 29 than anyone at our club.., bags of experience at a level above this, and he’s had great seasons at this level - he’s been promoted with Swansea and Sheff Utd out of this league…, 15 goals in Sheffs promotion season, who wouldn’t take that.

Scores goals and creates havoc. And ran rings around Bellingham et al last season.

Sign him up.

PS I don’t wear socks, hence the surprise.

He didn't run rings around Bellingham or any other Madrid player and didn't even start against them in the 4-1 defeat. Had a better match in the 1-1 draw but was subbed and didn't score in either match. In fact he scored 3 times in total last season. A worse than 1 in 10 return.

Edit - Bellingham didn't even play in the 1-1 draw when McBurnie started so was he running rings around him for 20 minutes when Las Palmas were already losing 4-1?
