Not a great day today. Lots of work to be done. 19:49 - Aug 2 with 3412 viewsDublinBlue84

Hutchinson clearly won't play for us again
Philogene injured
Townsend injured
Davis with a knock
Hackney not coming
Cajuste far from done

Lot of work to be done in this transfer window now.

Poll: Should Davis have been sent off?

Couple of CMs, a striker, a replacement for Hutch if he goes. I'd say that's a few.

I always think in terms of 2 senior players per position plus backups that could be from development players.

Keepers: Palmer, Walton, Muric + backups (can afford to let 1 or 2 go). Tick.
Fullbacks: Clarke, Johnson, Leif, Townsend, Young. Tick.
CB: O’Shea, Woolf, Greaves, Kipre, Baggot. Tick.
DM: Matusiwa. Need 1 more
CM: Taylor, Humphreys. Our weakest spot, with both ideally being backup. Need at least 1 more starter
3 AMs: Broady, Clarke, Philogene (notionally left); Chappers, Szmodics, Hutch* (notionally centre); Ogbene, Wes. More than covered, lots of options with several able to cover more than 1 position.
Striker: Hirst, AAH backup (need 1 more of starting quality)

In short, I make you right. We’ve got problems as it is trying to hit the 25 squad limit with another striker and 2 CMs (unless they’re U21s on loan). We really don’t need much more unless we lose a lot more.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Must admit after reading McKenna's quotes I'm feeling glass half empty too. Tomorrow is another day.

Hackney is the only disappointment.

Phil indicated Jens will get done.

Wouldn’t mind betting Davis plays Friday.

Philogene - that is a worry but let’s see.

Townsend - knee problem may be an issue.

Would definitely like to see a replacement for Delap though.

Re: Midfield, whatever way you slice it, 6 days before the season and we have a guy who’s been on loan at league one and Jack Taylor who has never fitted the system or been a regular starter for KM. That’s disappointing for a club in our position IMO, multiple windows down the line after a PL relegation. Obviously we went all in on Hackney and it didn’t come off, which sucks. Hackney played 43 Championship games last year, I’d be amazed if we get that out of Cajuste.

I like Cajuste (we better hope that happens!) but he has injury concerns in a 46 game season. I’d be looking for two in two out in that the 8 position (With Cam loaned out again) but I guess we are going to have Jack Taylor playing a lot of minutes for us this year. Not being negative or having a pop at the player but that’s a bit meh for me, I thought we have major upgrades across the middle. I’m happy to assess it more on September 1st though.

Anyway, as you were!

The main area of concern is the central midfield. We've not got much civer and probably need 2 players. We need one soon too as are we going to rely on Taylor for 4 games?

Other than another striker, we should be OK.

However, I'm not panicking until I've seen us Friday.

We need more than a few in.

We’d need some out to allow that.

If we cap the keepers at 3, we’ve got 24 players who’d need to be registered. If Hutch goes and we replace him with an over 21 year old, we’re then at the limit. We probably don’t need to replace him though.

There’s a possibility we don’t register H. Clarke if his injury is bad, so that would mean we could register Cajuste in his place (if he signs). Hackney is of age if he signs, so that’s another one we need to get rid of.

Our squad is huge in terms of senior pros, but lacks a lot of depth in cover because of few U21s (only Humphreys and Hutch). We haven’t got room for more established players.

We will have to see how easy that is in theory and how many of our targets are still available. Plenty of business is done late though and the loan market is obviously going to be utilized. I think it’s clear the management team will be bitterly disappointed with the Hackney decision though, we were clearly all in there.

Thing is, it's not like loads of players have moved on where you'd look at it and think "I wish we'd been in for them". We'll have other targets, loads of time left in the window still and most stuff happens later in the window, frustrating as that is for us as fans. We'll be fine.

Alternatively, the team looked sharp today and we have good depth in most areas of the pitch. We need a few more in but most business happens late in the window. We'll be fine.

We have essentially no depth up front or in midfield, if no Jaden or Omari now very light out wide.. season starts in 6 days and serious work to be done. So far pretty poor window.

Prem teams will sort squads this week, then lots of movements will happen. A few loans and a few permanents will come.

I was thinking that’s Austrian top division, Scottish top division and French top division sides we’ve seen off comfortably and we look in great shape and ready to have a cracking season.Even without Hutch, Hackney and Cajuste.

Stop talking sense

agree with all that, except humph & hutch count as over 21s, so we're going to have to lose more players to meet the limit

Few injuries in there though. Harry Clarke and Burns seemingly long term and may not be registered (at least until January). Possibly Townsend and Philogene (although let's hope the news is better with them). At least one of Hutchinson and Broadhead probably won't be here.

You're right to highlight the overall quality of the squad, but we're probably going to need more than the 3/4 you mention.

The only things I would like to work on are:

1-Composure and movement when the ball is with the GK and the opposition is pressing high.
2-Decison making around choosing the times to recycle and keep the ball to kill the game rather than forcing a quick ball and losing it then having to work hard to retrieve or stop an attack.

These two things would help give us a greater sense of all round game control. It’s not that I want 80% possessions, more better choices around when quick transition is good versus ball retention.
