Most high profile Championship opener of all time? 01:46 - Aug 5 with 1994 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | It might be what half our fans hate in the modern game but come on this is quite fun! Amazon Prime docu series just released, the GOAT QB co-owner of a promoted club in the second city, a global mega star with partial ownership of a newly relegated historic club on the other side. Don’t think either are going to be there but still a storyline. Both teams swimming in cash and probably one of the most fierce stadiums in England under the lights (well if 2001 is anything to go by it is!) Now a transfer plot twist adds even more spice to a global audience. Afternoon firmly booked off, Guiness me up bartender! [Post edited 5 Aug 1:51]

The so called randomised computer fixture generator is anything but. Yes, I know they avoid certain combinations at certain points etc but us v Brum could've landed anywhere. In terms of curtain raising, televised, narrative gold, it was a nailed on opener. Plus i just knew it would anyway because it happened 30 years ago when we rejoined the second tier from opposite directions. Just hope the outcome is different. Bloody Ricky Otto. I’m still angry about 2001! Should he have buried them in the first leg, that awful pitch and getting home at 3am before going to the school that morning. [Post edited 5 Aug 5:02]

We were a superior side to so many of those mid too late 90s championship power houses but Birmingham was always a bloody awkward achilles heel for us. Francis would often manage to get one over on Burley by means fair or foul. Bolton also belong in that irritating category, though we got past them eventually. I remember being very relieved it was Barnsley at Wembley and not Brum. [Post edited 5 Aug 2:06]

Yeah, interesting cup run that was in 2000/01, think a really average Liverpool team beat them in the final on pens, would have fancied us, could have made the season even better! We beat Millwall, Arsenal and Man City in the quarters en route. That Man City game was a jsut before Christmas extra time win (re-arranged game), proper football night that was, about 600-800 of us there mid week and both teams really wanted it. Venus extra time winner. Glad I got to go to Maine Road! Friday is the kind of game you want to start the season, they can’t really sit back either surely. Hope it’s fun and not cagey. We really s5it the bed in that game. Such a feeble collapse. And their fans will be just as loud Friday night. Let’s hope we’ve got our big boy pants on.

That’s over two decades ago though, it will be decent but I doubt as intense as that. Was a throwback kind of night! Yeah we basically bottled it!

Most high profile Championship opener of all time? on 05:00 - Aug 5 with 1625 views | RIPbobby | I was wondering if our players could handle it? A full and rocking St. Andrews is a different beast to most any of them played in. They are going to be so up for it. Hopefully it will be a touch easier now their stadium is more modern and less run down. It is still going to be one of the toughest gigs these players will have ever faced. [Post edited 5 Aug 5:06]

Certainly won’t define either sides season but a decent to have a high profile start.

Flip side is if we manage to pinch 3 points it would be a massive boost. But yes one of the toughest of the season but I thought that v Sunderland in 23/24

In fairness to us we have looked superb in pre season and ultra dangerous. Even if we sign nobody by kickoff we will give them a tough night. The only thing that stops us is a weak home ref who gives into their noise.

How about the fact we just came down from the Premiership, they just came up from Division 1. I know we’ve lost players but surely there is a significant gap in class? Mind you the beauty of football, who will be more fired up?

You fear it's going to be a bit different to that Sunderland game two years ago, albeit we have to be aiming for the same result. That team had been together solidly playing every game for 6 months or so. The current team feels very new, even with a lot of the players we signed a year ago. For example, have Szmodics and Hirst even started a game together before? It's such a shame our team had to change every week last season, it's meant there's not really been any continuity. Add to that the upheaval of this summer and big players leaving, it feels somewhat up in the air. O'Shea and Greaves should have a half decent partnership by now at least.

Yes I think they might not have come up against many with our intensity. We have many strings to our bow. It's not just a case of shutting one of us down.

I think you’re in danger of getting caught up with the hype as well. St Andrews will be no different to any large home ground with a fan base hopeful of promotion. Of course our players can handle it, they’re not shrinking violets, they’ve got PL experience, a large number have got promotion experience, one of the most competent managers. Having money and high profile backing makes less of a difference in this division against sides with PL parachute money. Brum may find the atmosphere just as challenging.

On the other hand, there will be a packed away end noted for their fine voice* to push our players on. * Judging by the number of times over the last few years other fan commentators have said we were particularly loud/energetic.
