Assuming Akpom and Cajuste sign that will be 6 arrivals this window.

Realistically only Cajuste would be one we could make profit on in the future.

It makes me think that 1 or 2 more signings will be youngsters to fit the player trading model that Ashton talks so frequently about.

I don't think so. I think we have regularly bought experience alongside younger players. There have been two tiers of experienced players. Players that are close to retirement and likely past their best - Aluko, Keogh, Luongo, and now Button and Young.

And then players we expect to get a few of their best years, but unlikely a profit - Ladapo, Ball, Szmodics, Ogbene,
Palmer, Leigh, and now Kipre and Akpom.

We absolutely still try and get these young players that could be worth a lot more in a few years. We spent most of the summer trying to get Hackney. But we are not quite as enticing as we would have been last summer to a player like Hackney, and we already have some great players to develop and focus on.

Were we not trying hard to sign Hackney who 100% fits that model?

To be honest, I'm still expecting (hoping) that we have more Omari-type business to be done. Granted players like Omari and Morgan Rodgers don't grow on trees, but given our relative wealth, McKenna's reputation, and general prospects, I thought we were now in a position to be purchasing these types of players for the mid/longer-term at a fraction of what they would cost us after a successful season on loan. How much would Omari have cost us outright if we'd bought him in the first place £3-5m?

I think that's probably more of a reflection of whose left than the policy itself ..

Luongo - 32
Morsy - 34
Burgess - 29

You can't just replace that experience with youngsters. Like any good team we need a balance.

if cajuste and akpom come off, it's also notable that 4 of the 6 will have come in from foreign clubs (4 of 5 if you discount button). last summer it was 1 in 12

If you get promotion.... that's the biggest profit the club will ever have.

Button saving the penalty in the Play Off final that gets us promotion... that's the model we're looking for.

That would be pretty disingenuous though with 3/4 having significant experience of the English leagues. In reality it's 1 still.

Is it just me or are the Twitter embeds a bit busted? I see a blank profile pic and no username.

EDIT: Of course as soon as I type that out it fixes itself.

I'd like Doak, but wouldn't fully fit the mould, being quite expensive and quite a known quality at Champ level. Definitely wouldn't say no though!

that's true, but it's still a sign of more engagement with foreign markets, building links with different types of clubs

Perhaps there does not need to be so much emphasis upon that side of things, having secured an unexpectedly early season of Prem riches, plus parachute money in its wake. It's not like we went completely mad on spending - and have recouped at least a quarter of that already, with Delap.

Future profitability has to be balanced against sufficient experience to get the job done. Much of what we've lost this summer has been the experience (Morsy, Luongo, Tuanzebe, Burgess), so that is the area most in need of topping up.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

To be fair to Alan Hansen he was right. That group of youngsters that Man Utd was the exception to the rule.

Aye speaks more to what grabs our attention imo; inevitably the big fee signings are the younger guns. Townsend & Palmer other good examples of practical recruits, while we haven't been afraid to spend significant wages targeting immediate-term success either (Moore, Phillips, Sarmiento, Enciso).

What it does mean is that we've now built/strengthened/renewed relationships at the club to club level with some European clubs that we didn't necessarily have before. That's a good stepping stone to signing more players from those clubs in the future who haven't played in English leagues before.
