O’Shea 12:43 - Aug 9 with 1957 viewsPositivelyPortman

Having just watched the highlights after last night’s game, I was wondering if O’Shea may have done better for their goal. It seemed that he watched the ball go over his head and hit the post, but instead of just standing in the goal mouth, maybe he should have charged at the goal scorer and it may have put him off and made the area narrower.
If the player had seen him charging at him, out of the corner of his eye, he may well have panicked.
What do you reckon?
Apart from that he had a good game.

He didn't have a lot of time. He just did what most people would do with a split second to think. Make yourself as big as possible and try to block it.

Truly impaired.

If he had held his ground he could have been first to the rebound.

But his instinct was to try and get to the ball for the clearance. It hit the post and rebounded past him. It could have gone straight in. It could have come straight back to him. He just acted instinctively.

It's too late by that point, and just guesswork. This time he guessed wrong.

Nothing to do with O'Shea...all to do with Greaves.

I thought this at the time. He made the decision to stay on the goal line rather than charge Stansfield down and narrow the angle

I was screaming at the TV for him to push out. No idea how easy it would have been in the moment to make that decision, but had he have put pressure on Stansfield rather than opt to stay on the goal line, I think there's a chance he could have prevented a goal

All hypotheticals though and thought he had a good game

Don't think the OP is blaming O'Shea. Just saying could he have charged Stansfield down

When I saw it originally, it looked like he thought it was going wide, so was 'ushering' it out, as I seem to remember him having his arms outstretched.

Thought it was pretty much all on O’Shea tbh. It looks like Greaves as Kyogo gets in behind him but that’s only because after Palmer cleared O’Shea made no effort to get up with him and was still dawdling on the edge of the box, playing both strikers on. Pretty shoddy all round really

Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

I've heard criticism over Greaves and now O'Shea about the goal.... but this is one area of the team I'm not worried about. I think these 2 looked pretty good most of the game and if we've got Kippers and Woolfy as back up we're in good shape. More worried about stiffening up CM.

That was exactly what I thought.

I must say I thought that too but suppose it was a difficult judgement call in a split second.

I was more surprised by what Palmer did. Keepers practice a save and getting up straight away, but he just stayed on the ground and watched. Think he could have done more.

all a result of Clarke's faux attempt to win a header.

I mean where does this end? Palmer booting it up to Clarke to 'challenge' for a header?

Is Greaves our new boo boy? I thought he was excellent last night.

Yep. We were poor as a team - couldn't string passes together, were toothless in midfield and be a goal threat.... yet we're focusing on our CBs. Yes, I'm sure this goal could have been prevented in hindsight , but I'm worried that we were outplayed most of the game.

i think any player who is given the tiniest bit of criticism in any given game is the new 'boo boy' for the hard of thinking.

Have you not seen that individuals will try to find a way to apply the blame for a goal to a player they've taken a dislike to?

I'm surprised Muric isn't being blamed...

Or maybe Jackson.

Taylor was close to Stansfield before the ball went in to our box, and he didn’t track him back in. Not greaves or O’Shea’s fault, it was our midfield failing to track their number 10 and allowing him to be first to the rebound off the post.

There's been a couple of threads though related specifically to his performance yesterday, which feels odd given he was one of the better performers.

Perhaps folks preferred Burgess. Fair enough, but he's gone
