Everybody is in agreement 08:34 - Aug 10 with 1215 viewsGuthrum

The performance on Friday was below par, some players were struggling a bit, Birmingham had a good game-plan to counter us with strong atmosphere in the ground, we might need more in some positions.

Fans and Manager have all said pretty much exactly the same thing. We have a good idea the club is trying hard to rectify the bits they can (from what transfer info gets out). There is very little disagreement on symptoms or cure (barring a few cranks who demand radical surgery).

Good. Everyone is pulling in the same direction and there are no platitudes or attempts to pretend all is ok.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

That pretty much sums it up for me.

Concerning the season has started and we are in the current position, but I guess with losing such big key characters in the summer (not Delap, I mean the Burgess’s etc) that it was always going to be a tough start.

It's also a product of having to start the season a month before the transfer window closes, so we get a month of uncertainty in terms of which players are going to be here for the season.

Yep, come sept we could have 3/4 different starters in the team each to what we see now.

That said, so important we don’t drop too many points if we are serious about having the top 2 as our aim.

Hard agree from me.

In a way I can understand the harbingers of doom that are lingering on here too. Not saying I agree with them, but I understand the feeling. Much as we say the players have come off what can only really be described as a massively disappointing season, in which loss has been ground in to them, and we need to give time for their confidence to recover and flourish again. The same can, I guess, be said of us fans. We have seen week after week of our team coming up short, things going against us and our confidence has also been jarred. It's going to take time for the negativity to dissipate from the crowdbase too. I think we can all agree that a couple of wins and decent performances are needed for confidence, all around.

Don’t underestimate the difference in summer break, rest and preseason either.

Brum played their last game of last season on May 3rd, we played West Ham on May 25th.

3 weeks may not seem much but almost certainly means that we are slightly behind the non relegated teams from a rest and sharpness aspect, I don’t expect fitness to be an issue but certainly sharpness from playing matches as Brum played more preseason than us.

It’s one of the few disadvantages the relegated sides have vs the rest.

Possibly the hardest away game of the season as well though, against a hyped-up team and set of fans who watched their club steamroller League One. Could have gone horribly horribly wrong.

Think I am slightly conflicted on this at the moment.
On one hand, there is an expectation amongst the fanbase that we have a championship super team ready to go that simply struggled with the level last season and will be dominant at this level. There's plenty of substance to that given what's happened with other recently relegated sides, but there's every possibility that we have a team that's actually a bit dysfunctional, regardless of the level, doesn't quite know it's roles properly, has endured a lot of change down to players in/out and injuries and it will take a little bit of time to sort out.
But on the other hand, a year ago, with a massive financial windfall, we took the opportunity to remodel our entire team around some big championship players who would either develop into PL players or, at least, would be ready for the championship a year on. That we are now at that point and we have probably half of those players with huge question marks about where they fit and even if they do fit, is a scenario we probably shouldn't really be in at this point. Of those 12 signings, only DOS, Townsend and Greaves have clear defined roles in the team (plus Omari and Delap), Cajuste, Ogbene, Szmodics, Clarke, Johnson are all heavily debated, whilst Muric and KP are done with.

Last time in the Championship, we started with a shaky performance away at Sunderland but managed to steal all three points. I agree that, like last time, we were'nt ready. The signs are there that we're a couple if signings and injuries away from being a decent side. We got the ball into good wide areas and we won free-kicks in those areas, but the end product wasn't there. Both teams bi-passed our non-existant midfield in Sam's absence but everyone knows we have to fix that. My recollection of the championship was that there were four decent teams, but the overall standard was surprisingly poor. BTW well done Charlton for being the only promoted team to get a win. Has that even been mentioned.. COYB

The three promoted teams covered all bases over the weekend. Of the three relegated teams Southampton won, we drew, so hopefully Leicester will complete the set and have a total shock of a result in losing to Wednesday later today!

This might not surprise anyone, as much as I said out loud that we’d get a draw, deep down I thought we’d get done about 2/3-0!

However, if SS shot goes in I think we’d have won

Apart from the ’Muric is our best keeper and should be starting’ debate, which had 8 uppies and 9 downies on Black&Gold’s thread last time I looked! (Mine was a downie).

The thing that really bothered me watching the game is that we only started playing after going a goal down. If we had done that from the start, we could even have won the game, don't think Brum would have been able to match us had we gone a goal up.

Could be several reasons for this of course: Brum stopped us playing; we didn't have the confidence from the start with many players missing from key positions; perhaps it was KMs instructions to sit back and wear them down.

If you had sat down to watch as a neutral from about 60 mins onwards, you would probably come away from the game saying that Ipswich deserved that late equaliser. Before that, we were dross.

Point gained from one the the hardest away games, onwards and upwards.

This is it for me. Before the game plenty of people were saying that given everything around the game, they'd be very happy with a point. We got a point and the reaction is more what I'd expect if we got pumped. We weren't great, it wasn't a great game if we're honest as Brum were all about trying to stop us from playing and the ref was very whistle happy. They had to work hard to live with us, lots of players cramping up, and despite our lack of depth, we still had players we could call on who improved us and enabled us to control the latter part of the game, albeit with a lack of quality in and around the box to create chances. It's a solid enough start, lots of work to do to improve, but I think some of the negativity has been disproportionate.

Very much *this*.

All that buying of players for their capability to step up, but more than capable at Championship level, just hasn’t worked out (yet, anyway). Disastrous letting Burgess, Wolfy, Hladky, Axel and Broady (if he does) go. I appreciate they wanted to in the end, but we could surely have played them more and done deals if we’d chosen to.
