Less than 1 week ago:

If a man’s “set to sign”, not even Football Manager lets you do this madness.

Poll: So, how many league wins did you see in person?

This is a fair point.

The question is (using Hackney as an example), when do you give up on your prime target. If they sign for someone else, it's easy - move on to your next target. However, it's less clear-cut in many circumstances - Hackney being the perfect example. Do you completely give up on him now, and sign someone else?

And this is just me, but the fact he was here and had a look round and still went back, for me, says we move on.
But obviously I don’t know if his agent made comment ‘he likes the look of the place, let’s see if anything else comes in’ which would have given MA etc hope.

We’ll be good again... one day

There are a few things not to like about the current regime but the bootlicking of the CEO might be the worst. He failed to give McK a CF in the summer window 3 years on the trot so far.

Yes, terrible isn't it - seems we're going the way of Sheffield Weds.

We went in to the Championship opening night with Barbrook/Humphreys as reserve CM, and Al-Hamadi as deputy ST and emergency RM - doesn't matter what way you dress it, that's poor squad building.

And I like Mark Ashton - has done remarkable things at this club - but let's not pretend everything, always, is absolutely perfect.

Don’t need to praise him but equally think it would be harsh to blame him for not getting players in.

Summer 22 - Ladapo & Ahadme
Jan 23 - Hirst
Summer 23 - None
Jan 24 - Moore & AAH
Summer 24 - Delap
Jan 25 - None
Summer 25 - Akpom

2/7 windows where we haven’t brought a striker in. Is that the fault of Ashton or our recruitment team aiming too high? Based on most of our transfers I’d argue the latter. Supposedly Summer 23 we were after Adam Armstrong when realistically that was never going to happen.

Similar to Hackney if we don’t get more CMs in. Is that Ashtons fault or McKenna & the recruitment team for targeting players who clearly have reservations about joining?

I'd have added getting in the Championship's leading scorer in Szmodics as well to that list. Though I still maintain a key factor in our relegation was injuries to players that would have been regulars for us.

All these complications people talk of, I’m surprised any team manages to make any signing

I guess the difference is signing a striker which KM can work with, can fit into our playing system, is willing to come to the club, and doesn't break our salary/transfer budgets versus just buying a random CF which we can afford.

And we will go into our 2nd league game with involvement, if not starting spots, for Philogene, Akpom & Cajuste.

That there proves part of the problem - Akpom and Cajuste are joining in the second game, with no pre season because of late business - the summer is a two month window with full knowledge of when the season begins.

Philogene, will wait and see what he can deliver, because has shown very little so far.

Give the guy a paper round. Mark Ashton DELIVERS.

We’re replacing our best players, sold for over £90 million by the time the window closes, with several loans.

Good players Jens and Akpom, at this level, but you can’t possibly think losing our better players (Delap, Hutchinson, Burgess, Morsy, Tuenzabe, Broadhead and Wolf) and replacing them with only one permanent signing is what a strategic mastwrclass looks like.

I’d shudder to think what regression looks like to you.

Selling the entire squad, and pitching up on Hackney marshes?

‘This is brilliant, Ashton for PM.., who doesn’t love playing the dog and duck’

You need higher standards.

Think beyond your next emotional high, where you can insert any signing.

Do you know where we are if we don’t go up?

Lots of liabilities still that we can’t fund, our better players that were no where near the level above, all sold.

Maybe you don’t want to be a premier league club, maybe you don’t know what those finances actually mean, or how long it can take to fix those failures.

Our owners couldn’t be any clearly, what do they need to do, they put their frustrations and desire to sell up in very basic English.

That’s the consequences.., possibly with positive outcomes, certainly longer term new owners I think could be fantastic.

But get a grip of how a football club works, the numbers, how selling can strip a squad for a sales multiple, and you’d understand the deep concerns in the short term.

Ignorance and emotional investment, if that’s all we needed, we’d be clapping Hirst and Nolan still.., Ashton deserves credit for the success, and scrutiny for the failures, both are equally important.

I don't think any team makes all the signings they want of the quality they want. They have to make compromises.

The point is very much that we wanted another another striker in all three Summer transfer windows and failed to get one. That left us short at critical times.

If we don’t get another central midfielder it’s a massive failure from Ashton and will probably cost any chance of promotion.

Exactly this.
