The panic and catastrophising going on after an unimportant cup defeat and a good away point is absolutely ridiculous. We’re two games into a very long season. We have one priority, being in the mix for promotion. We certainly shouldn’t be putting huge effort into the tinpot cup. We’ve got a couple of difficult potential outgoing transfer situations, and have had a tricky summer in terms of recruitment. But people saying it’s all over or we’re going to be relegated (!?) really need to go for a long walk and calm down. It is - definitively - far too early to be making any kind of assessment if the squad or the season yet. Get a grip.

Good post, but it's not only this.
The knives were well and truly out by some for MA and KM last night.
Are they beyond criticism? Of course not, but some of the drivel posted here last night was just ridiculous.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Are we that good that we can just dismiss a 'tinpot' cup? Good results generally come from good performances, ive not seen a good performance so far this season.

I don't agree it's all over or relegation and i think we will get better, but we also need to grab the games by the scruff of the neck and not sleepwalk into everything will be better.

And to add after 1 league win all calendar year as well.

The issue isn’t just the summer; we’ve been disappointing for a year. Nothing you’ve said is wrong, but I think people (me included) had decided we would be able to put last year behind us and come out flying. On paper we have one of the strongest squads in the league, yet they look like strangers.

So I can understand the reaction and people are always raw after a defeat (I wouldn’t want it any other way - take the emotion out and it would be a boring game). I haven’t seen anyone say we’ll be relegated, but if anyone is then that’s clearly nuts. We’ve got plenty of time and good players, but we need those final pieces in place and then KM’s got a bit more work to do on the training pitch.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

I have seen a couple of people say we're at risk of doing a Luton.

Reference to Luton has been made by several posters on here.

the risk is there, i don't think we will be anywhere close, but it's always a risk

what baffles me however is we've barely played any of our new lads, yet this squad who's been together for 2/3 years looks absolutely lost

I'm not sure that going to St Andrew's with Brum all hyped up, having the plan and ability to really get in our faces is necessarily indicative as to how the season will pan out. That's not really the game for take-off if we are going to fly.

We have a very good team, but there has been some hyperbole about how superior it might really be compared to others in the division. Small margins vis-a-vis the better sides, rather than a significant gulf. Also, our footballers are vulnerable to intense pressing in a broken-up game (which is what Friday night was).

Bromley actually played nicer football against us than Brum did.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

You're second para isn't really true, though, is it?

Friday, the Team had Leif, Hirst and Taylor, who could really be counted as part of the squad that's been together since the good times. Only Leif from that list was a nailed-on starter, and he clearly wasn't fit.

Last night, had Walton, Woolf, Leif, Cam, Chappers and Ali. Again only Leif was a nailed-on starter from that list, and again, he wasn't fit, hence only 45 minutes. All the rest of the players involved in both games were either bit-part players or have mainly been out on loan. It's no real surprise they are looking a little lost.

Our main issue is that the backbone of the team has been ripped out over 2 years, and we have had so much churn that we've not managed to settle on a new backbone. There is a lot of work for that to be put in place in this window, and I worry that even if we get the players in place, we know all too well, it takes time for that structure to settle into place.

It is true though isn't it, squad, not starting lineups. Players that have been involved in training for many many months, matchday squads, cup games, the works. All worked under the manager who know the transitions, who've seen the runs their squad mates make etc

Of course im not expecting a world class performance, that's not going to happen, but you wouldn't watch the last two games and think such a large majority of those involved have been under KM for a while.

@tonybied beat me to it.

The 11 we've started with bore little resemblance to the teams we were playing last season. Why invent things to fit a narrative. The performances on Friday and last night were disappointing, but both games were not ideal to judge us by for various reasons.

Sunday is important. We'll likely start with an 11 and bench that is close to what we'll have through to Christmas, with maybe a couple of starters joining before the end of the month.

I'm reserving judgement until next Monday...

Fans have watched us barely win a game at home for a year. Then struggle hugely against a recently promoted Birmingham.

The cup against Bromley could have almost been a nice escape from the rigours of the last however long, instead it was another kick in the teeth.

Fans have absolutely every right to feel down-beaten and negative.

It's for McKenna and the players to lift fans after long periods of disappointment.

That's a crazy argument. You're comparing performances of totally different 11s.

11 that will have rarely played together in a competitive match. The time to judge harshly is when we have a like -for-like comparison. Not necessarily the same starting players - as that can't happen with departures that have happened. But when we have the like-for-like replacements on the field. As I said in my previous post - that is likely to be closer to possible on Sunday.

Even including benches doesn't change my point massively. The main, first names on the teamsheet, live, feel and eat McKenna's values kind of players are not there. Most have gone or are wrangling for a move away. These are consistent, experienced players who instill confidence in those around them. We don't have enough of them in the door at the minute, and even when we do (if we manage to, of course!) it's is going to take time for them to put it all into place.

I feel this is going to be a rough month, which we will need to muddle through. McKenna has a massive jigsaw puzzle in front of him right now. He will need a lot of help putting it together, especially when he needs to find some of the missing pieces before he can do that.
