I wanted to just say a few words about mental health, and not specifically about any single player or individual, but more generally - though obviously a couple of threads about one player has led to it.

Three times as many men as women die from suicide in the UK, with the largest mental health issues being with men aged 40-49. Men are less likely to get support or talk, either professional or from friends or family.

I say this because phrases like "man up" and "grow a pair" can be extremely unhelpful. We do not know the personal situation or lived experiences of any other person - player or other member of this community - and I think it's important to remember that words have meanings and impact.

In the past I have had bad mental health issues, and I can guarantee you that a huge number of other people on TWTD either have experiences with or are currently having difficulties. Of those that have been lucky not to have been there, they don't know what will happen in the future. Certainly when I was in my darkest places I didn't really feel that I could contribute enough to making my own day pass smoothly, let alone turn up for my then-fairly-low-level job. It is not an unusual situation, whether an individual is high or low profile, rich or poor.

I don't want this to be a lecture, nor that Phil/Gav should police language, and I certainly don't really want it to be another thread about any single footballer. Just that players mentioned on this board may read things written here, and even if not other fellow TWTDers will read things written here and when we write - however heated, angry, or frustrated we are - we should be mindful and awake to other people's situations. This is not about my history, not about any single player, just about being intentional with meaning and language.

There are organisations that can help if you need support. Your local NHS practice, or if you prefer something more anonymous then search for CALM, the Samaritans, or Men's Health Forum.

I wanted to post yesterday about Al-Hamadi's cryptic X post a month or so ago and how none of us know what could be happening with him but people wanted to vent so didn't bother.

By all means criticise the player for his performances but some of the language and thinly veiled glee was disgusting.

Agree with your broader point as well.

Truly impaired.

Well said.

I'm not happy about having a player refuse to play, and it is frustrating to see a lack of quality, but look on X where we know players have accounts and they are being called rats, snakes, not capable of playing 2 divisions below, to poor for non league...this is not the way, but society does seem to have lost its sense of reason

apologies, down vote was unintentional - didn't even know i'd clicked the arrow. have corrected.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Genuine question (and apols for my ignorance) - what is a mental health first aider?

A mental health first aider's role is to provide initial support to individuals experiencing mental health challenges or crises, guiding them towards appropriate professional help. They are not therapists or counselors, but rather trained individuals who can recognize signs of mental health issues, offer a safe space for conversation, and connect people with necessary resources.

a niche perspective

Thank you for posting this. You are 100% correct and your post is incisive, thoughtful and important. Words certainly do have meaning and impact, sometimes far beyond personal frustration and quite frankly ignorance.

I have no idea how somebody can be in a place where the think their only option is to end their own life. Mrs Cs cousin, who was in the 40 to 50 age range and was a good chum of mine (and an avid Leicester City, Tigers etc fan) did just that, an intelligent man with a well paid job and a lovely family.

At his funeral some people judged him; said things that were incomprehensible to me. Why? Because I’ve never been close to the place he was in where that was his only choice. I remember him as good company, funny, fun, caring, interested and interesting.

On life’s journey it was my privilege to travel a little bit with him.

I’m dealing with some really tough stuff at the moment and let it show on a post in another thread with my silliness. My apologies but the learning point is that it’s never good to assume that you are invulnerable to stress. It’s easy to do and there’s a path from that which can potentially lead to a poor place if you don’t recognise it.

That’s not quite the same as people with what I’d define as serious issues or is it? Better people than me will know but I suspect that our knowledge and appreciation of mental health is borderline medieval. There may be no votes in it, but just possibly it’s a tad more important than idiots in the HoC. I don’t know, I’m rambling.

My plea is for people to vent and rage as they please, but to try and lay off personal abuse and attack. Who knows who reads social media? All the more reason to be wary. I don’t like what is happening with OH or his Agent’s decision making but I see no merit in piling in on a bloke I don’t know around a situation I’m not party to. Maybe that’s for the future.

Until then, be kind folks. In life you will meet and gather plenty of enemies you can truly vent your hate on. I have. Football players and idiots on Forums? Really not worth the energy.

Apologies for the over long rant.
