McKenna is really gonna have his work cut out 06:20 - Aug 15 with 2507 viewsLegendofthePhoenix

The summer is turning into a mini Bomb squad, so few of the previous promotion campaign left. Leadership in the squad, team togetherness, shaking off that losing mentality/running toward adversity, learning our playing style and having the right movement. These are all going to be big challenges. We will now surely be in for 2 or 3 more quality players having brought in £45M yesterday, so probably players like Doak/Fellows/Hackney/Brownhill/Ruiz plus a new keeper will be incoming. We will have more individual quality than ever - but how long until they gel, and we see the team as greater than the sum of the parts? When it does gel we will be amazing, but McKenna is gonna really earn his crust to do that pronto.

Poll: would you rather

Yeah but get the business done earlyish, give him time to work with them in pre season, get some mins in the legs. We’ll be good when we line up for that first game vs Brum.

Muric gone. Slicker gone. Walton not good enough. Button is very obviously a 3rd choice keeper.

It was made clear, Ashton and McKenna were rebuilding for the prospect of promotion again and they said openly they needed different players and different types of player.

The 22/23 and 23/24 teams were great teams, but individual deficiencies were also there to be seen.

We need to trust them to get the players they want, even if that means waiting longer than anyone wishes. We appear to be signing all those we were linked with apart from Hackney so far. And even that might happen again later in the window

McKenna has built a team under pressure of being the biggest team in L1 and if he believes in himself and is as good as we know he is, he’ll do it again. It’s a lot more difficult in the Championship of course though

It’s a big 2 weeks for us to demonstrate that we’re capable of signing a different level of player to those that got us to the PL the first time. I am yet to be convinced we can do that tbh and think the transfer activity has been questionable at best the last two windows, with obviously this one still to be assessed as we get through it and see them in action.

Still one or three to be got rid of as well. New players, players back from injuries and some that haven't been convincing for some time.
A tough job for KM and one where we can't afford to lose too much ground early doors as it's doubtful we would go on runs similar to our two promotion seasons. Not impossible I know.

We've sent players to train away from the squad and told them they have no future with the club?

Because, that's what a 'bomb squad' is.

Yes. We've sent them to Kuwait, Wrexham, Forest, Sassuolo, Swansea and Burnley to train on their own.

In theory, the higher quality of player we are now signing should suit McKennaball much better than those that have left.

It will take time to adapt, like any club would, but we will be in a stronger position come end of August

It’s so important we ‘keep in and around the top 6’ whilst these players get up to speed… don’t want to be in a position where we’ve lost 12/16 points on rivals playing catch up, because every dropped point then feels like the end of the world.

To stop you crying on every reply?

I’d probably like to engage in some football chat, but you’ve never given a single insight into football, so I genuinely don’t know if you would be worth discussing it with.

And as you don’t actually attend, would make it somewhat difficult

Because the ones we have aren't good enough for how we build from the back.

Thing is me ole mucker, is that i do engage with people on here.

Just not people like you, as you are tediously negative about everything.

And I do attend, as explained before, it was exceptionally hard to get tickets last year as a member. I will be there against Derby, not that I have to justify myself to you.

Walton needs to move to get regular football , sitting on the bench is not doing him any good .

Time to move on and for us to get a new keeper , potentially to be first choice .

On top of all that. We've also had some behind the scenes leadership/key staff members moving on.
Would've been nice to hit the ground sprinting. But there's a bigger all round job here than some fans realise.
Bit of patience needed, imo. See how we are in a months time.
It's not quite the "Demolition" we saw a few seasons back.. But certainly a lot of upheaval to a squad that was very settled, but not quite good enough for where we want to be.

Yep, bomb squad is a well known term for players a club want to get rid of, who are made to train separately from 1st team to encourage them to leave

Yes but apart from all of that, what have those two ever done for Ipswich?
