They are in a different position to what we were a year ago. They had 2 or 3 years in the Championship to build up to the PL. We didn't have a an overseas network we could've done with and I dare say that Sunderland with their 46,000 capacity stadium seems bigger to a lot of prospective players.
I don't get this constant line that we didn't try to sign experienced PL players last season. It'll also be interesting to see what happens if Sunderland get relegated. I'm not sure they'd be in a better position than us. |

Our very expensive EFL English only recruitment policy was really so questionable and Sunderland have proved that isn’t “all you can do” despite many telling me that was the case all last year. They look like giants compared to what we were fielding last year!
How can they field that starting Midfield in August and were had Morsy + Mass and brought Taylor and Harness on against Liverpool, not that this summer feels much different! |
Interesting throwaway line in Stu Watson's season preview piece where he mentioned that we tried to bring in more experienced Prem players but were rejected because we couldn't get them to agree to our relegation wage reduction clause.

I have no doubt that we got things wrong, the club have said as much. But we were completely unready for last season because we'd climbed so fast. I hope the promoted clubs do well because it'll be good for English football and for us if we go up again, but the only downside is it brings folk like you out who will use every victory from a promoted side to do Ashton & McKenna down. | |

Let's see where they are at the end of the season before declaring the got their transfer strategy spot on. The theory - and I don't know if it'll work just as much as you don't know if it'll fail - is that the likes of Philogene and Clarke will be older and more experienced if we go up again. Likewise we'll have the revamped training ground and hopefully a better network of scouts overseas. The whole club will be older and wiser me hopes. | |

Nah they were crap, Jack Clarke was their best player two years ago, it’s not like they were building a PL ready squad, they were basically a West Brom or something last year, they had 8 debuts today.
It’s not PL experience, it’s international recruitment, top European league recruitment, we spent the same damn money (with some inflated fees) in the EFL.
I pray ownership is pumping cash into this part of the club and getting in new people. | |

Precisely. In hindsight our recruitment (or lack of it) buying up only English players brought up through the domestic system was an expensive failure followed up by the failure to strengthen in Jan. Signing Ben Godfrey on loan was the ultimate joke, it was as if MA wanted to troll the fans.
It also shows that Louis-Dreyfus, Le Bris and their French connection has probably been more astute in selecting and attracting players ready for the Prem even though they are favourites to go down as well. It also brings the oft used excuse that "Prem-ready players won't join a side who are favourites for relegation" moot
