I'm gonna watch the Sunderland game with interest this afternoon on 16:48 - Aug 16 by TheBoyBlue | They are in a different position to what we were a year ago. They had 2 or 3 years in the Championship to build up to the PL. We didn't have a an overseas network we could've done with and I dare say that Sunderland with their 46,000 capacity stadium seems bigger to a lot of prospective players. I don't get this constant line that we didn't try to sign experienced PL players last season. It'll also be interesting to see what happens if Sunderland get relegated. I'm not sure they'd be in a better position than us. |
Excuse FC, they were pretty average even last year and were rubbish the year before when Jack Clarke was their only outlet. They just purchased a strong new team on the continent to give themselves a chance, where as went did the opposite for the same money.

I'm gonna watch the Sunderland game with interest this afternoon on 16:44 - Aug 16 by Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | So in mid August and they’ll have as many home wins as us all of last season, what a depressing thought! Our very expensive EFL English only recruitment policy was really so questionable and Sunderland have proved that isn’t “all you can do” despite many telling me that was the case all last year. They look like giants compared to what we were fielding last year! How can they field that starting Midfield in August and were had Morsy + Mass and brought Taylor and Harness on against Liverpool, not that this summer feels much different! |
Interesting throwaway line in Stu Watson's season preview piece where he mentioned that we tried to bring in more experienced Prem players but were rejected because we couldn't get them to agree to our relegation wage reduction clause. Don't remember that being common knowledge or a big talking point before but makes you wonder what Sunderland have done differently to persuade some of the players they've now got to join.

Why the obsession in comparing? And why the obsession in doing down a management that has got us to this stage from oblivion? I have no doubt that we got things wrong, the club have said as much. But we were completely unready for last season because we'd climbed so fast. I hope the promoted clubs do well because it'll be good for English football and for us if we go up again, but the only downside is it brings folk like you out who will use every victory from a promoted side to do Ashton & McKenna down.

We won't fully know until the end of the season whether it paid off and what squad they would be expensively lumbered with if it doesn't. Not sure there were too many wanting to bin off our champ squad though.

But we’d basically have to do a lot of what they done this summer if we went up with this squad anyway, half of the lot we brought last summer won’t just make it at the top level. Same if we go buy Fellows etc. [Post edited 16 Aug 17:03]

They've won one of their easiest games of the season as a season opener where surprise results aren't uncommon. Let's see where they are at the end of the season before declaring the got their transfer strategy spot on. They may well have done, they may not have done, one game isn't enough evidence either way.

The theory - and I don't know if it'll work just as much as you don't know if it'll fail - is that the likes of Philogene and Clarke will be older and more experienced if we go up again. Likewise we'll have the revamped training ground and hopefully a better network of scouts overseas. The whole club will be older and wiser me hopes.

Nah they were crap, Jack Clarke was their best player two years ago, it’s not like they were building a PL ready squad, they were basically a West Brom or something last year, they had 8 debuts today. It’s not PL experience, it’s international recruitment, top European league recruitment, we spent the same damn money (with some inflated fees) in the EFL. I pray ownership is pumping cash into this part of the club and getting in new people.

But they weren't coming into this summer as the club that just came up from League 1, which was my point. You're right about the overseas recruitment though and I'd be amazed if it isn't something we're working on.

They were also rather a mess back in league 1 and hadn’t been there a while. It’s not like they were set up to go on parachute money or something. We had the money to spend but weren’t remotely in the same markets trying to make these deals happen.

We always need to gel. It’s Kieran’s favourite word for 3 months at the beginning of each season. I still say our transfer policy is what blew our chances last season. It was poor recruitment. And to be honest those players look no better now.

I don't believe we weren't interested in the same markets. We just weren't set up to take advantage of them. Unless of course you would be happy for us to take blind punts, which I imagine you wouldn't be.

Where in comparison we got comfortably beaten by West Ham home and away last season. Yes, it’s too early to judge their recruitment, credit where it is due I doubt too many had that result down as a home win today and by that margin.

Our home game was essentially an end of season walkthrough with no jeopardy and a team on their downers. The away game was, well away, and under a different manager.

Still couldn’t beat them, might have been a dead rubber when we played West Ham at home not playing for pride then?! Let’s not forget our abysmal points total at home last season, Sunderland are only 4 pts behind that already!!

Precisely. In hindsight our recruitment (or lack of it) buying up only English players brought up through the domestic system was an expensive failure followed up by the failure to strengthen in Jan. Signing Ben Godfrey on loan was the ultimate joke, it was as if MA wanted to troll the fans. It also shows that Louis-Dreyfus, Le Bris and their French connection has probably been more astute in selecting and attracting players ready for the Prem even though they are favourites to go down as well. It also brings the oft used excuse that "Prem-ready players won't join a side who are favourites for relegation" moot And enough of the bs that we were poor under years of Evans mismanagement. Yes we were, but so was Sunderland under their previous managements (just watch STID if you haven't) where the club was basically run to the ground by Donald and Ellis Short. Face it, besides the back-to-back promotions, since May last year Gamechanger, MA and KM have not exactly been the geniuses some people here have been alluding them to be. The goodwill is fast running out, let's see where we are after 10 games. And if Sunderland survive this season. Jury will be out.

Let's see after this window closes if the club has learnt their lesson. And performances after 10 games. Accepting mediocrity, failure and stagnation isn't helping anyone either. We have all seen too much of these blind apathy during the Evans years

Yeah, besides two promotions in four season what have MA and KM done. Goodness me, some people have short memories. Do you remember all the years under Evans?
