My biggest takeaway from the game today was the standard 16:10 - Aug 17 with 1525 views | homer_123 | of refereeing. Maybe it was a difficult game to ref? Very stop start, niggly fouls but just felt some of the decisions and consistency of decisions was dreadful. [Post edited 17 Aug 16:12]

It was almost as if he said before the game to himself "right today I'm going to give everything to the home team for the first 25 minutes and then the away side for the rest of the match". Poor fella.

He was responsible for the worst ref performance I’ve ever seen. And it wasn’t involving us, so I could hardly be accused of being biased. It’s the only time I’ve ever seriously thought a ref could be on the take. That was before he was booted out and moved overseas, and I’m surprised he was allowed to return to the top level

Not so sure- it wouldn't have intervened for the atrocious yellow cards

Our 2 yellow cards were for dissent. I believe referees have been told to try to clamp down on dissent this season. While Taylor's card was particularly irksome because he was incorrectly adjudged to have committed a foul & would have had a run on goal, as we didn't know what was said to the referee in either case, how can we call them "atrocious"?

My biggest takeaway from the game today was the standard on 10:52 - Aug 18 with 691 views | ElderGrizzly | Whenever we get PL refs sent down to us, I always think they struggle with the pace and spotting certain decisions as they are so reliant on the back up of VAR in the PL now. Yesterday just confirmed that even more.
My biggest takeaway from the game today was the standard on 10:55 - Aug 18 with 679 views | Lamp | 1st half Southampton kept doing the old Pep trick of making fouls in the opposition half when they lost the ball. Had the ref actually booked someone sooner for that it would have been a different game. Also unsure how Downes didn't get booked for dissent given his reaction to the foul going against him on his 1st handball

Over the last year, Madley has refereed 27 games, none of which have been in the Premier League, so he should be fully adjusted. It wasn't an easy game to referee, with lots of minor fouls & as a close game between 2 teams of similar ability was always likely to get fractious.

Odd post. I was commenting that invariably, Town fans come on here moaning about the referee's performance after nearly every game. I bet it's similar on most football forums as partisanship rules & fans want every debatable decision to go in favour of their team. I didn't think the referee had a great game yesterday, but at least he didn't make any real game-changing howlers.

Ah! Genuinely thought he was a PL ref. No excuses then, he's just sh!te
My biggest takeaway from the game today was the standard on 11:37 - Aug 18 with 539 views | HighgateBlue | Certainly not the greatest, and did make clear mistakes in my opinion, but: (1) we need to pay attention to what neutrals think. It's near impossible to be objective when watching your own team. Talksport were of the view that a pen could well have been given against Matusiwa, including Darren Ambrose, who's hardly biased against us. The ref was not markedly anti-Ipswich by any means. (2) we need to stop blaming refs. If we can't stick the ball in the back of the net at this level, and we can't keep it out at the other, there may very well be other reasons for that than the ref. It's getting tiresome to read anti-ref sentiment all the time, and for it to be your biggest takeaway from a game like that, when the ref was far from the worst, could be argued to resemble looking for a scapegoat? I appreciate the alternative is to blame our own players, but then sometimes they may just have questions to answer.

Madley was one of those supposedly up & coming young refs who was fast tracked into the PL, referring his first PL game in 2013 when aged only 27. He quit in 2018 after an unwise video appeared showing him mocking a disabled person. He disappeared to the Norwegian lower leagues for 18 months, before coming back to England, first at grass roots level & then the lower leagues. He returned to the PL in October 2022, but seems to have been confined to the Football League recently.

I could argue...which it looks like I am...that I wasn't commenting on yesterday's performance at all given I said all the refs in our first three games have been rubbish. Our performances have been poor, but I saw an improvement yesterday. Anyway must get on.......
