He kept having to step back to make his second touch.

Honestly, Walton, Muric and Palmer have all underperformed compared to Vas. We should have kept him, unless we could bring in a world-beater, which we most certainly did not.
Feels a bit like he left under a cloud though, so it seems unlikely. |

I suspect some "humble pie" might have to be eaten somewhere if he did come back though. |
I said this when he left saying that him leaving would unsettle the team and he should be kept around in some shape or other as the players know the way he plays and have built a defensive unit together.
I got huge amounts of downvotes saying that he was nowhere near good enough and that he was one of the weak links in the team and each time I brought it up I got ridiculed.
So a lot of people on this board will need to eat humble pie as well. | |

So the premier league is a massive step apart from for keepers... Riiightttt. And out of interest what were these balls he was flapping at? He's the most commanding keeper from crosses I've seen in our goal.

I was happy with him last season probably as the demands on him using his feet were far less important and he did very well with his shot stopping. I was even convinced he could be the best division.
Im looking back on my assessment there and thinking I have got it wrong. He needs less of the shot stopping this season as we are a better team (relatively). He looks thoroughly unconvincing. So uncomfortable with the ball at feet, seems to struggle with passing at all levels, slow to move it, slow off his line and then when he did decide to race off his line today he decided to try and control it.
I would understand if the club looked for a new GK, surprised we didn't go for Rushworth. |  |

Greaves in particular doesn't seem to be particularly keen to make himself available for the pass.

….living off that save he made against Villa last season and the fact that sections of out fans were so anti-Muric.
As you say, the save he made yesterday was absolutely basic.
Not getting a decent keeper that fits our style of play is, along with not getting a striker in, a sad indictment of our recent transfer dealings. |  |

He isn't a step up from Walton. I did say that when we signed him in Jan. We'd have been better off sticking with Walton last season and spending time properly finding a long-term Hladky replacement rather than giving a sticking plaster a 3-4 year Prem contract.
Bizarrely though, Forest did make a move for Palmer this summer, but we turned it down (!) |
How would we have been better sticking off with Walton last season!? He was injured. That is why Palmer came in. Almer did well and he kept the gloves.
Palmer is NOT the problem. He's an excellent championship keeper. He'll build the relationships with he defenders and get better as well.
But the team are not clicking yet for various understandable reasons. And we need to get new players up to fitness and into the team (including ones we haven't signed yet). Palmer is so far down the list of issues. I think he will be a strength once we are firing.
Vaz is going to become Becker in people's minds in another 12 months. Unbelievable how a, despite a decent season, a weak link is being made out to be a genius keeper. He was good with his feet but a far inferior keeper to Palmer. Of course Vaz's feet and Palmer everything else would be class. | |

For balance, Hladky looked like he won a raffle to play in goal his first season, and even after becoming a complete revelation for us in the Championship, popular opinion on here was that he was not good enough for the Premier League. I think all of us would take Hladky of 23/24 back, but lots of water has passed under that bridge since.
All Championship keepers have glaring limitations. Palmer was brought in to solve a Premier League problem - he's not as well suited to our system in the Championship but let's see how he develops with game time and coaching. I would guess we've faced 2 of the best pressing sides in the League in our openers, without the luxury of a settled midfield and missing Morsy's ability to take the ball under pressure.
For me, I'd like a larger sample at this level before we write him off. |  | | |
